Abstract

An annular chuck for clamping, centring and longitudinally positioning a tubular workpiece 7 comprises jaws 18 slidable along inclined slides against a spring 19 within a jaw carrier 10 which is itself slidable parallel to the axis of the chuck in recesses 9 in the body 5 of the chuck. The body 5 may be rotatably and indexably mounted on bearings 3, 3a in a housing, or may be fixed. In operation a workpiece 7 is forced longitudinally by a back-up support against the jaws 18 and the weaker springs 19 compress and the jaws move inwards to clamp the workpiece. Further longitudinal pressure compresses the stronger springs 15 until the end of the workpiece engages seatings 8a in positioning blocks 8 spaced peripherally around the chuck between the recesses 9. The chuck, when rotatably mounted, is indexed by a jack-operated rack 34 which turns a rim 32 having pawls on its inside surface that engage in notches in the chuck body 5. The chuck body 5 is locked in a selected position by a jack 28 operated finger 25 engaging in further complementary notches 24.
