Abstract

A method of producing a stencil comprises introducing into a film of material desired pattern of soluble and insoluble regions with intermediate regions progressively varying in solubility, removing the regions of greatest solubility and progressively dissolving and removing the intermediate regions until the insoluble regions are of a desired size. One application of the method is the production of a colour television screen, wherein the faceplate of the tube is coated with a film of dichromated polyvinyl alcohol and exposed to ultra-violet light through a shadow mask. This produces a dot pattern of insoluble regions, each dot being surrounded by an area of progressively more soluble material in the penumbra of the dot. The screen may now be flushed with a 3% H 2 O 2 solution which removes the unexposed areas of film and part of the partly exposed areas to leave dots of the required size. Alternatively the unexposed areas of film may be removed by water and a 7% H 2 O 2 solution applied to reduce the size of the remaining dots as the required. A film of graphite is now deposited over the whole screen after which the screen is treated with a 35% H 2 O 2 solution which dissolves the hardened polyvinyl alcohol dots leaving a pattern of graphite filling the areas which were not covered by the dots. The original dot areas are then coated with fluorescent materials and a reflective metal layer is applied over the whole screen.
