Abstract

In a plug 2 and socket 1 assembly (Fig. 1), comprising housings 5, 3 which have respectively a rib 7 (Fig. 8) and a co-operating groove 8 (Fig. 6) to permit assembly in one relative angular position only, and which enclose contact-carrying insulating inserts 9, 11, the inserts are positioned at angles dependent on the voltage to be used by securing them to intermediate elements 13, 14, which are preassembled in one of a selected number of positions. The intermediate elements 13, 14 are formed with a plurality of bores 16 and are secured to the housings by means of dowel-pins 17, and to the inserts by screws. The socket insert 9 contains contact sleeves 10 and the plug insert 11 corresponding contact pins 12. One sleeve and one pin are earthed, and the earthed contact is situated on a radius through the alignment means 7, 8 or at one of a fixed number of angles thereto. The intermediate elements 13, 14 may be circular flat plates or rings made of metal or insulating material. The plug insert 11 has a locating pin 27, so that on insertion into the plug housing 5, the element 14 only allows passage if the position of the pin 27 corresponds to the aperture 28. Since the element 13 has no such aperture, the insert 11 is prevented from entering the wrong housing. Closure covers 21, 22, screwed into and forming part of the inserts 9, 11, have, in their edge regions, marginal recesses 24 interrupted by supporting feet (25), through which screws attach the covers to the elements 13, 14 (Fig. 2, not shown), and to the tension relief means 32, a guiding projection of which 31 (Fig. 11, not shown) co-operates with a recess 30 in the inner edges of elements 13, 14, so that the insert is correctly aligned within the housing. The tension-relief means 32, which may be of a thermoplastics material, comprises a supporting arm 34 with fixed and mobile clip portions 33, 35 respectively, connected by a flexible web 39. The closure covers 21, 22 have slots 37 to accommodate bars 38 on the foot 36 of the means 32, the foot 36 being disposed between the associated insert and closure cover.
