Abstract
Uniopolar atmospheric ions for air-conditioning of rooms are produced by discharges at the points of resilient fine wires 2 bearing against the glass body of a gas-discharge tube 6. An electrode 1 supporting the wires 2 is attached by spring clips 3 to the envelope of a fluorescent lamp 6 operated by A.C. or D.C. applied to pairs of terminal pins 10, 11. The electrode 1 is connected to that terminal of a D.C. source which corresponds in polarity to the desired polarity of the ions. The field is so low that little or no ozone, nitric oxide or radio interference is produced. Ionization of the air is enhanced by the UV light in the vicinity of the lamp, and the air is agitated by vibrations imparted to the wires 2 by the lamp.
