Abstract
A process for the hydrodimerization of acrylic acid derivatives selected from acrylonitrile, C 1 to C 4 alkyl acrylonitriles and C 1 to C 4 alkyl esters and amides of acrylic acid by reaction with an alkali metal amalgam, which comprises carrying out the reaction in a non-polar, at least partly water-miscible solvent medium containing a free quaternary ammonium base preferably of the formula in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 , which may be the same or different, are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals and water, the process being performed, without pH control at the degree of alkalinity generated by the reaction, preferably at a temperature between -10 and +30 C. Suitable solvents mentioned are ethers, e.g. tetrahydrofuran, dioxan, dimethoxyethane and diglyme (diethyleneglycol dimethyl ether).
