Abstract

9-(#-D-arabinofuranosyl) adenine of formula which is effective against viruses, is produced by cultivating a 9-(#-D-arabinofuranosyl) adenine-producing strain of Streptomyces antibioticus in an aqueous nutrient medium under surface or submerged aerobic conditions. The described microorganism is S. antibioticus NRRL 3238. The antibiotic may be isolated from the clarified fermentation broth by (A) concentrating the broth to 1/ 12 th the original volume, cooling to 5 C. and filtering with a filter aid. The cake is extracted with boiling water, cooled to 5 C. and the precipitated crude recrystallized from boiling water (B) adsorption on activated carbon followed by elution with aqueous acetone or aqueous alkanol. In the case of (B), a preliminary treatment may be given by extraction with an immiscible organic solvent such as ethylene dichloride or ethyl acetate or by treatment with a cation exchange resin in the sodium form. Further purification is by extraction of the crude with a water-immiscible alkanol such as n-butyl alcohol, adsorption on alumina pH 5-6, followed by elution with 95% ethanol and recrystallization from water or alcohol.
