Abstract

Polybutadiene is made by polymerizing, e.g. in solution, a stream of butadiene-1,3, in the presence of a lithium metal, or an organometallic lthium compound, e.g. butyl lithium, at a peak temperature above 315 F., said stream of butadiene containing more than 400 parts per million by weight of 1,2-butadiene or alpha-acetylenes, or hydrocarbon carbonyls or propadiene, and having the modifying effect equivalent to more than 400 parts per million, by weight, of 1,2-butadiene. The polymerization may be effected batchwise or continuously. Details of Mooney viscosities, molecular weight distributions, Shore Hardness, and microstructures are given. The polymer may be sulphur vulcanized. The polybutadiene may be blended with natural or synthetic rubbers, plasticizers, polypropylene, and carbon black. The polybutadiene can be dissolved in styrene and the latter polymerized to give high impact polystyrene. A flow diagram is given of a continuous process.
