Abstract

A caseless propellant cartridge suitable for a bolt setting apparatus and cattle stunning appliance comprises, a cylindrical body 1 of moulded or cast propellant powder having, overall, a substantially circular cross-section throughout its length, a single recess 3 therein, and an impact-ignitable powder charge 4 in the recess or in contact with at least one end of the body and covering the recess. The recess may have a star-shaped cross-section and can extend throughout the length of the body. The powder charge in contact with the end of the body is in the form of foils 2. The interior surface of the foils and at least part of the interior surface of the recess can be coated with an impact ignitable composition of tetrazene or tetrazene tricinate. The charge 4 comprises flakes of explosive having a thickness below 0.2 mm. and a nitroglycerine content of at least 40%.
