Abstract

A safety closure assembly, particularly for use as a supplementary coupling arrangement for connecting a pipe or pipe piece, e.g. associated with a pressure-reducing valve, to a bottle containing gas or liquefied gas, e.g. liquefied butane or propane, under pressure, comprises a closure member 12 slidably arranged within a tubular coupling body 1 acting as a combined inlet/outlet for the gas, the closure member being provided with a stop element 2a cooperating with a stop element, e.g. the shoulder 1c, on the body, and elastic means, e.g. the compression spring 3, arranged to push the closure member into a position where the stop elements contact each other and an end surface 2b of the closure member lies in the same or approximately the same plane as that of the free end of the body 1, sealing means 5 being arranged in the body to seal the closure member. When used in combination with a manual valve (not shown) on the gas bottle, the assembly allows the insertion into the body 1 of a pipe piece (6, Fig. 2, not shown), without the need to close the manual valve and without creating an air space which would otherwise dilute the initial flow of gas, the flow being suitably restricted since the gas is forced to pass through the narrow gap 1a between the closure member and the body, whereby gas loss on disconnection of the pipe piece is also minimized. When a pressure gas pipe (8, Fig. 3, not shown) is attached to the coupling, the closure member 2 is forced down by the gas pressure until spring 3 is fully compressed, so that flow into the bottle is unrestricted. In a modified assembly, Fig. 6, the closure member 12 is associated with a flowcontrolling valve 10 provided with a conical seal 10a ensuring complete sealing of the bottle in the absence of a manual valve, one spring 13 being arranged between the closure member and the valve 10 and another, stronger, spring being arranged between the valve 10 and the body. A rod 21a associated with an outlet pipe 21 is used to open the valve and closure member manually, as shown, to provide a restricted flow during delivery of gas, while during filling of the bottle the inlet pressure forces the valve and closure member to their lowest positions to provide unrestricted flow, as in the previous example.
