Abstract
The invention comprises a process of making a sand core or mould by hardening a phenolic resin in the presence of an organic carboxylic acid or an ester thereof having 2-10 carbon atoms per molecule, as catalyst. The phenolic resin may be derived from 0À7-3 moles of aldehyde per mole of phenol and may contain up to 3% nitrogen derived from a nitrogenous reactant, e.g. urea. 20-30% of catalyst may be used and compounds specified include the methyl and ethyl esters of maleic and lactic acids. These may be mixed with boric acid dissolved in glycerol or propylene glycol optionally containing water and a quantity of furfuryl alcohol not greater than the weight of phenol may also be added. 1-4% of the resin together with some hardener may be mixed with sand containing at least 99% silica and used to make foundry cores and moulds by the hot box method.
