Abstract

7-Amino-4-thia-oenanthic acid is prepared by reacting (3-mercaptopropionic acid, or the nitrile, ester or salt thereof, in the presence of a solvent and an azo-compound or a hydrazine at 15 to 150 C. with allylamine, the electrons of the nitrogen of which are bound, e.g. by using an acid addition salt of allylamine, allylamine in combination with an acid, or a slight excess of #-mercaptopropionic acid, and recovering the desired acid, if necessary after conversion of the nitrile, ester or salt thereof into the free acid. Dithiodipropionic acid is formed as a byproduct in the above process.
