Abstract

Novel compounds I (including acid addition salts thereof), wherein R is an alkyl radical (C 1 -C 4 ) and n is 1 or 2 are prepared: (i) (n is 1) by oxidation of the corresponding 9-pyrrolidinylidenethioxanthene or by oxidation in a neutral or slightly acidic solution of a 9 - pyrrolidinyl - 9 - hydroxythioxanthene (proceeds via an intermediate 9-pyrrolidinyl-9- hydroxy - thioxanthene - 10 - oxide) and (ii) (n is 2) by oxidation in a strongly acid solution of any of the above compounds including compounds I wherein n is 1. Pharmaceutical compositions having an antidepressant activity contain as active ingredient compounds I and are administered enterally or parenterally.
