Abstract
A charging machine for a nuclear reactor having horizontal channels comprises a magazine 1 having a spiral-shaped duct 25 receiving a chain 2. The chain is composed of identical hollow links 5 pivotally interconnected by spindles 23 carrying guide rollers 24, the end link 6 being attached to a grab 7 which may be advanced by the chain through a shield wall 20 of the reactor to engage a fuel element in a reactor channel. The chain is driven forward or in reverse by a pair of screws 3, 4 each having a double thread forming a helical channel for engaging rollers 28 carried by spindles 26 on the links 5. The screws 3, 4 are rotated by worms 39, 40 engaging gear-wheels (Fig. 9, not shown) coaxial with the screws, the worms being driven by a pulley 43 rotated by a motor 44 through a belt. The magazine 1 is carried by a chassis 18 movable over the floor 20 in wheels 19 to align the grab 7 with the selected channel, a telescopic portion 14 of the magazine duct 25 being advanced through the wall 20 by a motor 15. The grab 7 is electromagnetically controlled through a cable 8 passing through the chain 2 and winding on to a drum 9.
