Abstract
A toilet bar consists essentially of a mixture of C 10-20 straight chain primary alkane sulphonate and C 14-24 " alkene sulphonate," the cation being an alkali-metal or alkaline earth metal or a mixture thereof and the weight ratio of alkane to alkene sulphonate is between 4: 1 and 2: 3. Preferably 75% by weight of C 10-16 alkane sulphonate is incorporated, the alkene sulphonate being in the range C 14-18 . Other ingredients which may be included are inorganic salts, superfatting agents, lather modifiers, colouring agents, bactericides, fungicides, preservatives, perfumes and sequestering agents. The pH of the tablet may be adjusted by the addition of suitable specified acids or alkalies to any desired pH between 3 and 10.5. The " alkene sulphonate" is obtained by the reaction of SO 3 with [alpha]-olefins and subsequent neutralization and hydrolysis, and consists mainly of hydroxy alkane-1-sulphonate and alkene-1- sulphonate.
