Abstract
An organic liquid which has been used as a moderator-coolant in a nuclear reactor is purified by extracting with a liquid so that two liquid phases form, and separating one of the phases containing high-boiling impurities. Terphenyl containing polymerization products is extracted with an ethanol-water-toluene mixture at an elevated temperature. The heavy phase containing high-boiling impurities is removed and the light phase on cooling separates into two further phases, the light phase of which is returned to the extraction stage and the heavy phase distilled to yield purified terphenyl and an extractant distillate which is returned to the process. The liquid extractant may also contain aldehydes, esters, ethers, ketones, or aliphatic hydrocarbons and may be, for example, a mixture of acetone and water.
