Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbons are recovered from hydrocarbon mixtures by introducing the mixture into a counterflow multistage extraction system operated at 140-170 DEG C and employing a solvent boiling in the range of 225-295 DEG C. and containing dissolved water in an amount of not more than 2% by weight; cooling the solvent-extract phase by at least 15 DEG C to 115-150 DEG C; introducing the extract without appreciable flash vapourisation into a stripping zone operated at at least 1,5 atmospheres absolute, a top temperature of 115-150 DEG C and a bottom temperature of at least 165 DEG C; condensing the vapours, removing all water separating as a separate phase and recycling the remainder to the extraction system either at the end where the extract is withdrawn and/or at an intermediate point; and distilling the bottoms from the stripping zone at less than 0,5 atmosphere absolute and a bottom temperature of at least 145 DEG C. and at least 10 DEG C lower than the bottom temperature of the stripping zone. The solvent may be diethylene and/or dipropylene glycol or sulfolane. The process is particularly suitable for catalytic reformates having a final boiling point not higher than 220 DEG C and a lower cutting point about 100 DEG C. The volumetric ratio of solvent to hydrocarbon may be between 3:1 and 8:1 and the ratio of top product from the stripping zone to hydrocarbon feed may be between 0,2 and 0,7:1. The extraction may be effected in a column containing packing or sieve plates, a rotating disc contactor or a number of mixer-settler units, the number of theoretical stages being at least 5. The feed may be introduced at the first or second theoretical stage. Top product from the stripping zone is also preferably introduced at the first or second stage. The pressure in the stripping zone, and the temperature of the feed to it, should be regulated so that the weight ratio of vapour in the extract to fresh feed to the extraction system is below 1:10 and preferably no vapour is present. The difference between top and bottom temperatures in the stripping zone is preferably at least 40 DEG C, maintained by a reboiler. The bottoms from the stripping zone is distilled to separate hydrocarbons and solvent which is recycled to the extraction using live steam. Specification 739,200 is referred to.
