Abstract

Metal clad fuel elements are decanned by an acid dissolving process in an apparatus comprising an inclined vessel 6 having a partition wall 21 forming two chambers 18, 20 connected at their lower ends. The chamber 18 has an inlet pipe 22 through which acid solution is continuously admitted whilst chamber 20 has an inlet pipe 64 through which rinsing solution is continuously admitted, the effluent being discharged through a pipe 66. The fuel elements 19 to be decanned are stacked above one another in a transport unit 26 and are retained therein by a latch 30, this unit being placed in position above the chamber 18 as shown and the latch then withdrawn. The fuel elements are conveyed downwardly in the chamber 18 by two screw conveyers 38, 39 arranged side by side (Fig. 2, not. shown) only conveyer 38 being shown in Fig. 1. A rotary cam 56 on the screw 38 controls a pivoted gate 58 to permit one fuel element to drop from the unit 26 on to the conveyer for each revolution of the latter. When the fuel elements reach the bottom of the chamber 18 the canning has been removed by the acid and they drop on to two similar but oppositely-acting screw conveyers 60, 61 whereby they move upwardly through the rinsing solution in the chamber 20 to a discharge compartment 72. Solid waste falls into a basket 12 in a container 4 when a gate 70 at the bottom of vessel 6 is opened.
