[Also in Division C3] In a process for extracting granular material with liquid extractant the granules are placed in closed vessels in a series of vessels interconnected by pipes, liquid is introduced to a first vessel of the series to cause overflow therefrom into the subsequent vessels and cause discharge of a concentrated liquor from a downstream vessel, liquid being introduced into subsequent vessels of the series in turn to repeat the discharge of concentrated liquor from downstream vessels and leave in the vessels extracted granules for unloading. In the embodiment shown (Fig. 1) a series of vessels 1 to 8 are arranged in a circle, each containing polycaproamide granules. Water flows into the bottom of vessel 1 and extracts water-soluble substances from the granules therein, the liquor passing from the top of vessel 1 through a heater into the top of vessel 2 to displace liquor from the bottom of vessel 2 into subsequent vessels 3, 4, 5 and 6 into the downstream vessel 7 containing polycaproamide and concentrated liquor from a storage vessel 9. As the liquor from vessels 1 to 6 passes into vessel 7 concentrated liquor is discharged therefrom into storage vessel 9. After introducing the fresh water into vessel 1 it is disconnected and vessel 8 is connected, fresh water being fed to vessel 2, vessel 1 being unloaded and recharged with unextracted granules. The process is then repeated.
