Abstract

An armour-piercing projectile comprises a core 1 of sintered metal or alloy such as tungsten carbide and an envelope of light-weight material such as aluminium alloy. The envelope is made in two parts 2, 3 which may be screwed together. In the forward end of the core is a conical recess 4 having an edge 5 with a diameter not greater than half the maximum diameter of the core. The core may be glued to the envelope with an ethoxyline resin and its base 13 may be concave. The cone wall may be perpendicular to the coned peripheral wall 15 of the nose of the core. An incendiary charge may be placed within the nose of the projectile and a tracer or incendiary charge in the base. The projectile has a driving band 8 of copper, iron or soft steel. Particular values of the angles A and B defining the coned surfaces and of the diameters d and D, are given for a projectile of 20 mm. calibre.
