Abstract

An hydraulic steering plant for ships comprises a hand pump (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), which can deliver pressure liquid through a valve (23) to an hydraulic steering mechanism including an annular member (47) in a continuously rotating rudder pump (35), a return pump (36) utilizing the same annular member for returning the valve (23) to its neutral position and an auxiliary pump (37) which rotates together with the rudder pump and the return pump, the annular member (49) of the auxiliary pump being mechanically connected to separate steering means through solenoid (62). The auxiliary pump is used for automatic steering as the solenoid receives electrical impulses from an automatic steering apparatus of known type (not shown). Hand steering may also be established automatically on rotation of the hand pump if the power-driven rudder, return and auxiliary pumps fail. If the hand pump does not function and the electric automatic steering devices fail, the annular member (49) of the auxiliary pump can be moved by hand lever (63) for the auxiliary pump to bring movement of the rudder through the rudder pump.
