Abstract

Electrical components in the engine compartments of a vehicle are connected by a harness 4, Fig. 3 (not shown), to connectors mounted in passageways 16 . . . 19 in a housing 5 attached to the bulkhead 3. A harness 6 connects with controls in the passenger compartment and a jumper 20 is arranged to connect with a fusebox 8 having a detachable cover 78. Lead 72, Fig. 4, of the harness 6 are attached to tub connectors 71 and are led into recesses 49 . . . 52 via passageways 70, Fig. 8 (not shown), in which they are secured by tongues 74. Jumper leads 48 are connected to some of the tabs 71 and to the fuse unit 8 by the connectors 41 or 46 mating with tabs 32 of fuse contacts 33. The connectors 46 also have tab portions 47 so as to act as adapters. The housing 5 is then passed through a bulkhead aperture to which it is secured, a feather edge 27 providing a fluid-tight seal. Gaskets 79 made from reinforced neoprene are positioned in recesses 49 to 52 and flag connectors 57 secured to leads 64 of the wiring harness 4 from the engine compartment are fitted into blocks 53 to 56 where they are retained by resilient tongues 61. The blocks are then seated in flanges 23 of the housing so that the connectors 57 mate with the tabs 71 of the wiring harness 6, the blocks being provided with indexing ribs which mate with channels 66, 67, 68 in the recesses 49, 51, 52 to ensure that the blocks are properly located in the corresponding recesses. Projections 65 are a snap fit in dimples in the flanges 23 to retain the blocks. Cartridge fuses 36 are inserted in the fuse contacts 33, which are retained in the housing by resilient tongues 37 and spare fuses may be held in integrally formed ears 38. A lid 78 producing a fluid-tight fit is placed over the fuse unit. In a further embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown), the insulating connector blocks are shaped to receive straight receptacle connectors.
