Process for the preparation of terephthalic copolyesters such as the copolyesters of ethylene terephthalate-neopentyl terephthalate, characterized by reacting an ester-forming terephthalic acid compound, with a mixture of ethylene glycol and neopentyl glycol, in a reaction system, so that a mixture of the corresponding glycol esters is formed, and the glycol esters are condensed in the system by removing a part of each of the respective glycols so as to form a linear copolyester of high molecular weight; the total number of moles of glycols in said mixture, greater than the stoichiometric amount necessary to react with the terephthalic acid compound, and the ratio between the number of moles of ethylene glycol and the number of moles of neopentyl glycol in the mixture, greater than the relationship between the number of moles of said glycols in the copolyester formed in proportion to the volatility differences of the respective glycols in the system.
