Abstract

A variable light filter comprises a transparent enclosure, a transparent wedge-sectioned member 3 immersed in fluid within the enclosure, the cavity 4 defined by the enclosure having a shape corresponding to that of the wedge 3, together with fine adjustment means including a rotatable member 12 mounted in the enclosure, which member produces a linear movement of the wedge 3 in the cavity so as to vary the clearance between the wedge 3 and the enclosure. A bladder 6 full of air at normal atmospheric pressure occupies a small part of the cavity to take up expansion of the fluid with any increase in temperature. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 the adjustment means further comprises a screw 13 fixed to the wedge 3 and co-operating with the screw-threaded member 12 which is manually rotatable by a control knob 10. In further embodiments the linear movement is produced upon rotation of a pinion by a control knob, the pinion engaging a rack on the wedge 3, or upon rotation of a cam which co-operates with a lug on the wedge 3. Alternatively, the wedge may be urged by springs towards one end of the enclosure and brought towards the other end by means of a flexible, inextensible cable which runs round three edges of the wedge, the ends of the cable being attached to a shaft operable by a control knob. The filter may be used for a window or spectacles.
