An optical microscope comprising coarse and fine adjusting means has a movable table 4, and a fixed member 2 attached to a microscope frame 3 between which is disposed a further, movable member 1 attached to fixed member 2 by means of a resiliently deformable link system consisting of either flexible rods or strips 10, 11, 12. Coarse adjustment is provided by rotation of pinion 7 disposed on a drive-shaft which meshes with a toothed rack 6 rigidly secured to table 4 which is vertically movable between slideways. A screw 9 provides fine adjustment, the back lash in the toothed rack 6 being taken up by the strips 10, 11, 12.
