Abstract
Process for reducing copper oxide to a lower state of valence, characterized by the operations of creating a mixture containing as active components: (a) a reducing agent chosen from sulfur, copper sulphide, iron sulfide, sulfide of zinc, tin sulphide and lead sulphide, (b), copper oxide, and (c) a chlorinating agent chosen from the alkali metal chlorides and the alkaline earth metal chlorides; and heating the mixture in a protective atmosphere to an elevated temperature sufficient to chemically react the active components and produce the reduction of the valence state of the copper oxide.
