Abstract

<PICT:0996718/C1/1> In the production of chlorine by alternate oxidation and chlorination of active constituents comprising a polyvalent metal oxide/chloride on an inert support, said active constituents are renewed whilst passing through at least one reaction vessel at high temperature by injecting finely divided active constituents into or immediately before a zone in which said constituents are in a pasty condition. In the Figure, granular masses comprising alumino-siliceous cylinders impregnated with ferric oxide, potassium chloride and cupric (or cadmium) chloride (promoter), are fed from reservoir 11 to chlorination vessel 1 via a channel 2 into which pulverized potassium chloride is blown from reservoir 12. Chlorination is effected at 450-550 DEG C. Hydrogen chloride and/or ammonium chloride is introduced at 3 whereby the ferric oxide is chlorinated to form ferric chloride, and water and/or ammonia formed simultaneously is removed at 4. The granules pass through channel 5 to oxidation vessel 6, iron filings being injected into the upper empty part of vessel 6 and air being admitted at 7, the vessel being maintained at 530-560 DEG C., and chlorine and nitrogen are removed at 8. The granules are finally returned to reservoir 11 by means of an air lift or trough-conveyer. The potassium can alternatively be injected as carbonate or hydroxide and the iron and copper as chloride, carbonate or oxide.
