Abstract

An electrode comprises a collector grid sandwiched between a pair of preformed plates consisting of an active mass reinforced with between 0À1% and 5% by weight of fibres. The fibres may be cellulosic, e.g. rayon, or cadmium, silver-coated rayon or cotton. The active mass may be cadmium oxide, silver oxide or zinc oxide. In one example, CdO powder containing 5% nickel powder was made into a paste with an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol and an aqueous solution of carboxymethyl cellulose and rayon fibres. The paste was air-dried, ground to size, and pressed to form a plate. Two such plates were pressed on to a silver grid. In an alternative process, CdO powder was added to a thixotropic suspension of polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose solution and rayon fibres to form a slurry. The slurry was applied between two layers of carrier paper and passed under a doctor blade to form strips of active material. The strips were then pressed, cut, applied to a silver grid and pressed again.
