Abstract
Hair is curled or straightened by holding a tress of hair in desired configuration between the walls of a former by a flow of air passing between the walls and applying heat to the hair while it is in the desired configuration, to dry it. As shown a former, made by winding a sheet of non- corrosive material into a spiral, has enclosed ends 12, 14, and a tress of hair, sucked into the spiral through the mouth 18 by a suction pump connected by a pipe 20 to the centre of the spiral, is dried by heated air passed between the pipe 20 and casing 26 to enter the outermost spiral of the conduit through an annular aperture 28. The tress of hair is gripped by a spring- urged clamp which is positioned near the mouth 18 and is operated by a lever on the outside of the casing. Suction may continue during the passage of heated air through the conduit and, before or after the hair is dried, a treating liquid may be introduced through the aperture 28. An adaptor for use when only the ends of a tress is to be curled has superposed straight conduits for hair and for drying air and is interposed between he former and the scalp by engagement with the lips 34. Apertures in the adaptor allow the passage of hot air towards the scalp to dry the roots of the hair. In modifications the hair receiving conduit is straight, to straighten a tress of hair, or is corrugated.
