Abstract

A seat has a first link part rigid with the seat part and a second link part (2) pivotally secured both to the first link part about a first axis (3) and to the backrest. A row of teeth (5) are located on the second link part (2) and a locking member 6 is pivotally mounted at 7 on the first link part, and is movable into and out of engagement with the teeth (5). A cam (9) is pivotally supported on the first link part (1) about a second axis (10). A spring urges the cam (9) to engage the locking member teeth 8 with the teeth (5). At the instant the cam (9) causes the locking member 6 to engage teeth 5, 8, the point of contact (B) between the two surfaces 6a, 9a is below a straight line (18) joining the first and second pivotal axes (3 and 10), and the angles alpha , beta between the common contact tangent t and the lines connecting the pivot axes 10,3 with contact point B are each greater than 90 DEG .
