Abstract

The flame-proof or fire retardant properties of a composition of an alkenyl aromatic polymer with ammonium bromide, are synergistically enhanced with an organic phosphate or phosphite and/or a benzotriazole, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, 2-OH-5-Me-benzotriazole, 1-H-benzotriazole or 1-H-benzotriazole-1-methanol. The composition components may be admixed with the polymer with the aid of aqueous media and spray drying, and may comprise as optional additives corrosion inhibitors such as the diethyl amine salt of octyl phenyl esters of phosphoric acid, solubilizers such as polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate and emulsion stabilizers such as polyethylene glycol ethers. Preferred polymers are those of styrene, vinyl toluene, a -methyl styrene, and styrene with butadiene-styrene copolymer.
