Abstract
A method of making a loudspeaker diaphragm comprises the steps of impregnating a textile fabric with a stiffening agent forming the fabric to the required shape and then coating it with a thermosetting softening-agent-free lacquer. In one example the lacquer was made by preparing a 35% by weight solution in a mixture of methyl glycol acetate, toluene and ethyl acetate of the following mixture: 7 parts by weight of an ethoxyline resin and 3 parts by weight of an urea formaldehyde resin. In another example the lacquer was made by dissolving 10 parts by weight of polyvinylformal and 4 parts by weight of a cresolformaldehyde novolak in 86 parts by weight of xylene cresol 1:1. Specification 709,397 is referred to.ALSO:In a loudspeaker diaphragm (see Division H4) made of textile material both the sound radiating part and the peripheral supporting edge are impregnated with a thermosetting resin and after the resin has been set, the sound radiating part only is further coated with a synthetic thermosetting lacquer. A textile material, e.g. cotton, nylon, polyester fibre &c., having equal warp and weft is impregnated with a thermosetting resin, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde novolak and hexamethylene tetramine in an ethanol-water mixture. When the fabric is dry it is transferred to a mould where it is heated under pressure for a short time, i.e. 10 seconds, so as to produce for example a non-deformable conical diaphragm. The periphery of this diaphragm may be grooved and may be further impregnated with a plastic substance. In order to make the sound radiating part of the diaphragm impervious to air and resistant to insects, it is coated, by immersing, spraying or brushing with a lacquer and is then heated at about 200 DEG C. for 2-15 minutes. The lacquer should be of the type used for coating wires and examples are given, i.e. ethoxyline and urea formaldehyde resins in a solution of methyl glycol acetate, toluene and ethyl acetate, or by dissolving ten parts by weight of polyvinylformal and four parts by weight of a cresolformaldehyde novolak in 86 parts by weight of xylene cresol 1 : 1. Specification 709,397 is referred to.
