Abstract
A process for preparing a hydrocracking catalyst is characterized in that a refractory solid support having cracking activity and consisting essentially of SiO2 and at least one oxide of the group Al2O3, MgO, ZrO2 and ThO2 is impregnated with a solution of at least one of the compounds of the metals of Group VIa and VIII of the Periodic Table, the impregnated support is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere between 700 DEG and 760 DEG C. for 1-8 hours and the oxidized catalyst is thereafter reduced with hydrogen at an elevated temperature. Specified metals, compounds of which are used for impregnation, are Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Ru, Rh, Os and Ir. Specified supports are natural aluminium silicates and synthetic composites of SiO2-Al2O3, SiO2-ZrO2, SiO2-Al2O3-ZrO2, SiO2-MgO, SiO2-Al2O3-MgO, and SiO2-Al2O3-ThO2. Preferably supports are so impregnated that the final catalyst contains 0,01-20% of Group VIa or VIII metal, e.g. a support consisting of 63% Al2O3 and 37% SiO2 is impregnated with either aqueous Ni(NO3)2 so as to impart 1-6% Ni to the final catalyst or an aqueous solution of a Pt or Pd salt so as to impart 0,01-10% of Pt or Pd to the final catalyst. Synthetic supports may be made by separate, successive or coprecipitation techniques. Pelleting of catalysts may be effected in the presence of stearic acid, rosin or graphite. The catalyst may be used in fixed or fluidized beds. Examples are given. Specification 917,470 is referred to.
