A process for the manufacture of chlorine dioxide, characterized by comprising the continuous introduction in the proportions suitable for producing chlorine dioxide, of aqueous solutions of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorate or magnesium chlorate; a chloride of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, magnesium or hydrogen; hydrogen peroxide or another oxidant such as perborate, and a strong mineral acid in a reaction zone in which said solutions are mixed rapidly and the resulting mixture maintained at a temperature between 75 and 100ºC for a time not exceeding 5 minutes, introducing the acid solution in the reaction zone separately from the solution of said chlorate, continuously extracting from the reaction zone the resulting mixture comprising a chlorine dioxide solution, at a rate similar to that of introducing the reactants, entering chlorate, the chloride and the hydrogen peroxide or perborate in the proportions equivalent to 0.1 to 2 moles of chloride ion and 0.2 to 1 mole of peroxide for each mole of chlorate ion.
