Abstract

Un proceso para la preparación de cristales de xantofila que contienen al menos 85% de xantofilas totales con al menos 90% de trans-luteína y/o zeaxantina, cantidades muy pequeñas de cis-luteína y otros carotenoides, que comprende (a) saponificar ésteres de xantofila presentes en un extracto/oleorresina de un material vegetal adecuado mezclando el extracto/oleorresina con una disolución alcohólica de álcali sin adición de agua y calentando la disolución resultante a una temperatura en el intervalo de 65 a 80 °C; (b) separar el alcohol de la mezcla resultante bajo presión reducida para obtener un concentrado crudo saponificado; (c) mezclar el concentrado crudo saponificado resultante, obtenido en la operación (b), con agua para formar una mezcla oleosa diluida; y (d) someter la mezcla oleosa diluida, obtenida en la operación (c), a extracción con acetato de etilo para obtener un extracto que contiene xantofilas y recuperar cristales de xantofila que contienen al menos 85% de xantofilas totales con al menos 90% de trans-luteína y/o zeaxantina, cantidades muy pequeñas de cis-luteína y otros carotenoides mediante métodos convencionales.
