Abstract
Ethylene is polymerized at a pressure above 500 atmospheres and a temperature above 40 DEG C. using as catalyst an a -ketopercarboxylate of formula X.CO.CO.OO.R where R is a hydrocarbon radical free from non-aromatic unsaturation and is attached to the oxygen atom through a tertiary carbon atom and X is either -OOR or -OY, Y being a hydrocarbon radical free from non-aromatic unsaturation. The percarboxylate may be a peroxyoxalate in which R is a t-butyl, dimethylbenzyl, t-amyl, p-menthyl, phenylcyclohexyl, p-isopropyl-a , a -dimethylbenzyl or decalin radical. The process may be made batchwise or continuous, may be carried out in the presence of a chain transfer agent such as hydrogen, ethane, propane, cyclohexane or carbon tetrachloride and may be carried out in bulk or in an inert liquid medium such as benzene or petroleum ether. The ethylene may be copolymerized with other monomers e.g. vinyl esters, methyl methacrylate and propylene.ALSO:Decalin peroxalates are made by reacting decalin hydroperoxide with the dichloride of oxalic acid or the chloride of a monoester of oxalic acid. Di-t-butylperoxy oxalate is made from t-butyl hydroperoxide and oxalyl chloride and details are given in Ex. 1 of how the peroxyester may be obtained in a pure, crystalline form.
