Abstract

In a process for producing furfural by steamdigestion of a pentosan-containing raw material in the presence of a non-volatile acid catalyst, the raw material is subjected, prior to digestion, to the continuous flow of steam therethrough under a steam pressure less than that necessary to produce digestion, and then simultaneously digested and steam-distilled under a pressure greater than 20 p.s.i.g. Suitable conditions for the preliminary treatment include steam pressures up to 20 p.s.i.g. for times of 15-75 minutes. Suitable catalysts include sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and alkane sulphonic acids. The pre-steaming may be effected with or without the catalyst and added moisture. Examples are given in which the pre-steaming is carried out in the same vessel or a different vessel from that used for the digestion and distillation.
