Abstract
A manganese or mixed manganese/cobalt precursor is formed by co-precipitation with butylamine, and then a mixture of the precursor and lithium hydroxide or a lithium salt is heated at a moderate temperature. A method for the preparation of LiMn2O4 and spinels of formula CoyMn(2-y)O4 (y is greater than 0 and no more than 0.67) via a moderate temperature route comprises: (a) preparation of a manganese or mixed manganese/cobalt precursor by a co-precipitation reaction with n-butylamine (b) mixing the precursor with lithium hydroxide or a lithium salt and (c) heating the mixture at 400-650 degrees C.
