EL PROCESO DEPENDE DE LA CAPACIDAD DE DISIPACION DE CALOR TERMAL LIMITADA DE LA PARED DE LA TUBERIA Y DE LA PROPIA JUNTA DE SOLDADURA CASI COMPLETA PARA GENERAR UN GRADIENTE DE TEMPARATURA SIGNIFICATIVO A TRAVES DEL MURO, Y POR TANTO UN GRADIENTE DE PRESION SUFICIENTE DURANTE LA SOLDADURA. ESTE GRADIENTE DE PRESION DA COMO RESULTADO PLASTICIDAD METALICA Y TENSION PERMANENTE, Y POR LO TANTO UNA REDUCCION EN LA MAGNITUD DE LA TENSION FINAL RESIDUAL O PREFERIBLEMENTE SI LAS CONDICIONES LO PERMITEN, UNA INVERSION EN LA DIRECCION DE LAS TENSIONES DE TRACTORAS A COMPRESIVAS. EL METODO PUEDE SER USADO COMO UN PROCESO DE SOLDADURA O UN TRATAMIENTO TERMICO. EN EL CASO DE TRATAMIENTO TERMICO, LA SUPERFICIE LEJANA DE LA JUNTA DE SOLDADURA SE CALIENTA SIN FUSION DEL MATERIAL QUE COMPONE LA SUPERFICIE ALEJADA.
