EL FORMALDEHIDO Y/O METILAL SE HACE MEDIANTE LA ELECTROOXIDACION DE METANOL EN UN APARATO QUE SE DEFINE EN UN COMPARTIMENTO DE ANODO Y UN COMPARTIMENTO DE CATODO MEDIANTE UNA MEMBRANA CATIONICA HECHA DE UN FLUOROPOLIMERO QUE TENGA GRUPOS DE ACIDO SULFONICO O DE SULFONIL PENDIENTES, QUE ESTA RECUBIERTA SOBRE UNO DE SUS LADOS CON PLATINO APLICADO POR UN METODO DE IMPREGNACION/REDUCCION, DICHO RECUBRIMIENTO SIRVE COMO ANODO. EL CATODO PUEDE SER UNA CAPA DE METAL EN EL LADO OPUESTO DE LA MEMBRANA O UN CATODO DE METAL SEPARADO. CUANDO SE EMPLEA EL CATODO DE METAL SEPARADO, EL COMPARTIMENTO DEL CATODO CONTIENE UN ELECTROLITO LIQUIDO, QUE ES UN ACIDO ORGANICO CONCENTRADO, PREFERIBLEMENTE ACIDO FOSFORICO.
