SE TRATA DE UN PROCESO BASADO EN UNA BIOPELICULA DESARROLLADA SOBRE MEMBRANAS POROSAS, EN GENERAL, CARGADAS O NO SUPERFICIALMENTE, Y PERMEABLES A GASES OXIGENO O AIRE COMPRIMIDO. EL OXIGENO SE DIFUNDE A TRAVES DE LAS MEMBRANAS SIN PRODUCIR BURBUJEO A TRAVES DE LAS MISMAS. EL OXIGENO INTRODUCIDO SE AGOTA EN LA PROPIA BIOPELICULA ANTES DE LLEGAR AL SENO DEL LIQUIDO, O SEA AL AGUA RESIDUAL A TRATAR, CON LO QUE EL SENO DEL LIQUIDO ES ANOXICO. (O < 0,5 MG./DM3.). UN SISTEMA DE REGULACION DEL CAUDAL DE AIRE U OXIGENO SUMINISTRADOS, A UNA PRESION INFERIOR A LA PRESION CARACTERISTICA DEL PUNTO DE BURBUJA DE LA MEMBRANA, PERMITE SU CONTROL EN EXPLOTACION. LA BIOPELICULA ESTA ESTRUCTURADA EN PROFUNDIDAD EN CUATRO CAPAS DE ACTIVIDAD MICROBIANA, LO QUE PERMITE GRANDES VENTAJAS EN LA CAPACIDAD DE ELIMINACION DE LA MATERIA ORGANICA CARBONACEA Y DE LOS DISTINTOS FOCOS DEL NITROGENO, DANDOSE FENOMENOS DE OXIDACION BIOLOGICA DEL CARBONO Y DEL NITROGENO, DESNITRIFICACION ANOXICA Y FERMENTACION ANAEROBIA, BIEN CONJUNTA O INDEPENDIENTEMENTE.
