Abstract
A mechanically and hydraulically actuable disc brake has wear adjustment means operable only in hydraulic actuation. Hydraulic fluid introduced into the cylinder 21 causes piston 30 to move into engagement with a brake disc. During initial movement the piston will disengage from frictional engagement with a nut 35 and on further movement will carry nut along adjustment screw 40 to effect adjustment. When the hydraulic pressure rises above a predetermined value, the force of spring 47 will be overcome and results in cam plate 51, screw 40 and nut 35 moving away from cam plate 50 to re-establish frictional engagement between the nut and the piston. Mechanical brake actuation is effected by anticlockwise rotation of cam plate 50 forcing cam plate 51, screw 40, nut 35 and piston 30 towards the brake disc. Resetting of piston can be facilitated by removing anti-rotation stud 53 from engagement with cam plate 51 and rotating the cam plates clockwise to retract the nut 35. Relative rotational positioning of cam plates 50, 51 and bearing race 62 is maintained at all times by a plate 73 pivotally mounted on the race and having pins 71, 72 engaging in a bore and a slot in cam plates 51, 50 respectively.
