Abstract

Apparatus for reforming relatively imprecisely positioned members, particularly automotive body panels, comprises a pad forming device (10) for forming attachment pads (P) in an automotive inner body panel (IP) to provide for the attachment of an outer body panel to the inner body panel (IP). The outer body panel must be attached at a precise location and the inner body panel (IP) is not as precisely positioned. The apparatus has one or more fixed anvils (24, 26) which are positioned at a predetermined position adjacent to the inner body panel (IP). Movable floating support locators (30,32,34) are advanced toward the inner body panel (IP) until they make contact therewith, and then locked in a fixed position. A load is then imposed on the other side of the inner body panel (IP) by pad forming blocks (50, 52) to thereby form attachment pads (P). The fixed anvils (24,26) are configured to receive punching tools 58,60 which reciprocate to punch attachment holes (H) in the pads (P).
