- Hose assembly Primary passage
- the present invention relates to a multilayered apparatus for storing and/or transporting a cargo with a vehicle as shown in FIG. 1, a system and a method for the same.
- the apparatus (1) comprises a first container (5), defined by a first volume that is encompassed by a first layer (8), wherein the first container (5) is adapted to contain a solid bulk cargo or a liquid bulk cargo and the first layer (8) is made of a flexible material to allow the first volume to expand when it is loaded with a cargo as shown in FIG. 2.
- the said material may, for example, be latex, but any material that is flexible and would not contaminate the cargo to be contained may be used for the same purpose. This ensures that the container (5) has a variable volume depending on the weight of the cargo to be contained and the apparatus (1) can be used within different vehicles, such as a truck, a marine vessel, a freight train, a cargo aircraft, or a drone.
- the apparatus (1) further comprises a second container (6), defined by a second volume between the first layer (8) and a second layer (9), wherein the second container (6) is adapted to contain the same solid bulk cargo or the same liquid bulk cargo with the first container (5), and the second layer (9) is made of a flexible material to allow the second volume to expand, wherein the second volume is substantially smaller than the first volume.
- the second volume may be 10% of the first volume or less, or more preferably 5% of the first volume or less, or 3% of the first volume or less.
- the second layer (9) may also be made of latex, but a material that is different from the first layer (8) may also be used as long as it is flexible and would not contaminate the cargo.
- the second container (6) is adapted to contain the same cargo with the first container (5), it is ensured that the first layer (8) and the second layer (9) will not adhere to each other during the storing and/or transportation of a cargo, and even if the first layer (8) becomes damaged and the contents of the first volume and the second volume are mixed, the cargo in the first container (5) will not be contaminated since the second container (6) is adapted to contain the same cargo with the first container (5) and both of the containers (5, 6) would contain the same cargo during the use of the apparatus (1).
- the apparatus (1) comprises a third container (7), defined by a third volume between the second layer (9) and a third layer (10), wherein the third layer (10) is the outermost layer, as can be seen in FIGS 1 and 2, and is made of a non-permeable and airproof material with a higher specific strength than the first (8) and the second layers (9), wherein the third volume is substantially smaller than the first volume.
- the third volume may be 10% of the first volume or less, or more preferably 5% of the first volume or less, or 3% of the first volume or less.
- the second and third volumes being substantially smaller means that, regardless of the structure of the apparatus (1), at least 50% of the load would be contained within the first container (5), i.e., the first volume.
- the first container (5) would contain at least 80%, or more preferably at least 90% of the load by volume and the containers (5, 6, 7) are adapted accordingly.
- the specific strength is a material's strength divided by its density, which is also known as the strength-to- weight ratio or strength/weight ratio or strength-to-mass ratio. Said material may, for example, be kevlar if latex is chosen for the other two layers (8, 9).
- the third layer (10) is the outermost layer of the apparatus (1), it forms the part of the apparatus (1) that protects the interior of the apparatus (1) from the external factors and risks.
- the apparatus (1) further comprises a connection element (2), which is depicted in FIG. 3, that is in fluid communication with at least one of the said containers (5, 6, 7) to allow external access to at least one of the said containers (5, 6, 7).
- a connection element (2) that is selectively in fluid communication with all of the said containers (5, 6, 7) may be used, wherein the connection element (2) is adapted to have three configurations for each container, so that each container can be independently loaded with a cargo or any material.
- the connection element (2) may be placed on top of the apparatus (1) for convenience.
- the apparatus (1) further comprises a support means (3) comprising a plurality of support members (4).
- a support means (3) comprising a plurality of support members (4).
- said support means (3) is placed around the third container (7), i.e., around the third layer (10), to ensure that the apparatus (1) is sufficiently rigid when the first container (5) is empty and to protect the third layer (10).
- the support means (3) may be formed as a frame to cover and protect the third layer as an outer skeleton, and may be made of a material such as steel.
- the first, second, and third volumes of the apparatus (1) are individually isolated from fluid communication, meaning that their contents are not intended to be mixed at any time unless a damage occurs on any of the layers (8, 9, 10).
- the third volume is at least partly filled with an elastic adhesive and/or a heat-transfer fluid, which is used to regulate the temperature of the first container (5) and the second container (6). If the second layer (9) becomes damaged during the storing or transportation and consequently the contents of the second volume and the third volume are mixed, the cargo in the first container (5) will not be contaminated, thus, most of the cargo will be safe from contamination as the first volume is substantially larger than the other two.
- the third layer (10) becomes damaged during the storing or transportation of a cargo, the contents of the other two containers (5, 6), i.e., the cargo, would not be affected in any way.
- Elastic adhesives and heat- transfer fluids are well-known in the art and any material that is suitable for the invention may be used.
- the third volume may be at least partly filled with an elastic adhesive
- the first container (5) is adapted to contain a liquid bulk cargo (e.g., vinyl acetate, seed oils, ethyl alcohol, etc.)
- the third volume may be at least partly filled with a heat-transfer fluid.
- An elastic adhesive may be used in cases where the contents of the first two containers do not need to be cooled or heated during the storing and/or transportation, and it ensures that if the third layer (10) becomes damaged, it automatically seals the damaged area by flowing thereto and solidifying.
- a heat-transfer fluid liquid or gas, or a mixture thereof
- the heat-transfer fluid may be preheated and filled into the third container (7), or can be heated after it is filled into the third container (7).
- an elastic adhesive with a relatively high heat capacity, or a mixture of a heat-transfer fluid and an elastic adhesive may be used for the same purpose as these could be used for any type of cargo.
- the apparatus (1) provides safe storing and/or transportation of cargoes and eliminates the need to wash/clean containers of vehicles, which is a burdensome, expensive and environmentally damaging process.
- the apparatus (1) is also suitable for larger/heavier loads (e.g., 1000 cbm or 2000 cbm), and thus larger containers, such as a cargo hold of a marine vessel, and is particularly advantageous for loads above 200 cbm.
- the apparatus (1) may be loaded on site or pre-loaded, placed into a vehicle, then removed from the vehicle after it is transported to its destination so that another apparatus can be placed into the same vehicle.
- the interior of the apparatus (1) may be washed through the connection element (2), but this is optional and not necessary at all if the apparatus (1) is adapted to carry a specific type of cargo (e.g., flour), which is preferred to minimize the costs and the risk of contamination.
- a further advantage of the apparatus (1) is that the effects of sloshing are minimized, as the cargo that is placed inside the first (5) and second containers (6) would not have enough free surface to constitute sloshing due to the flexible structure of the layers (8, 9, 10) of the apparatus (1). Sloshing is a particularly dangerous problem that requires additional measures to be taken in ships and trucks transporting a cargo, especially a liquid cargo, as explained in EP 1976725 Bl.
- a further advantage that is obtained by the present invention is that a plurality of apparatuses containing different cargoes can be used within a cargo space and the cargo space in a vehicle can be efficiently utilized.
- At least one of the support members (4) may be adapted to receive electricty from a power supply, and at least one of the support members (4) may comprise a resistor (not shown) to produce heat by means of the electricity received thereby.
- the cargo inside the apparatus (1) can be heated if needed, which is advantageous if the cargo needs to be kept above a certain temperature.
- the support means (3) may comprise a plurality of interconnected resistors forming a web-like structure around the third layer (10), i.e., around the third container (7), to heat the containers.
- the apparatus (1) may comprise at least one, and preferably two thermometers to detect the temperature of the cargo and determine how much heat is needed to reach a specific temperature. Said thermometers may be opposingly placed to one another within the apparatus
- the power supply does not need to be a part of the apparatus (1), it may be a part of the vehicle to contain the apparatus (1).
- the apparatus (1) may further comprise a bottom plug (11) at the bottom thereof, which can be seen in FIG. 1, wherein the plug
- (II) is in liquid communication with at least one of the said containers (5, 6, 7) to allow external access to at least one of the said containers (5, 6, 7), and the bottom plug (11) may be adapted to selectively release the contents of a specific container on demand.
- the bottom plug (11) facilitates the unloading process of cargoes and may be used in combination with the connection element (2) to effectively wash and clean the interior of the apparatus, as a cycle wherein one of them is the inlet and the other one is the outlet can be created to save water.
- the bottom plug (11) may be equipped with a magnetic stirrer (not shown) that is arranged to stir the contents of the first volume, and the plug (11) may comprise a means to allow the magnetic stirrer to be driven by electricity provided by a power supply. If a liquid that must be kept homogeneous during the transport is to be carried by the apparatus (1), the magnetic stirrer helps keep the liquid homogeneous and prevent precipitation.
- the power supply does not need to be a part of the apparatus (1), it may be a part of the vehicle to contain the apparatus (1).
- the apparatus (1) may comprise three connection elements (2) to allow external access to each of the said containers (5, 6, 7), wherein each connection element (2) is in fluid communication with a respective container.
- each connection element (2) is in fluid communication with a respective container.
- a single connection element (2) may also be used for the same purpose, provided it is adapted to allow external access to a specific container at a time and may be configured to allow external access to another container if desired.
- connection element (2) may comprise a relief valve (12). Further, the connection element (2) may comprise a valve with a camlock fitting (13). In a further preferred embodiment, the connection element (2) may comprise a valve with a camlock fitting (13), a relief valve (12) and a flange assembly (14).
- said support means (3) may be connected to the flange assembly (14) to obtain a firm and robust structure around the third layer (10). The valve with a camlock fitting (13) and the relief valve (12) may be provided within the flange assembly (14).
- the valve with a camlock fitting (13) may be used for the cleaning purposes, i.e., as a water inlet, and the relief valve (12) may be used to protect the apparatus (1) from being damaged by sudden changes in pressure during the loading/unloading operations.
- the relief valve (12) may also be used to vacuum and seal the apparatus (1) after the container(s) is/are loaded.
- the present invention relates to a system for storing and/or transporting a cargo.
- the system comprises an apparatus (1) according to the present invention, and further comprises a hose assembly (15) suitable for releasably engaging with the flange assembly (14) of the connection element (2) in order to provide a fluid communication between the hose assembly (15) and at least one of the containers (5, 6, 7) of the apparatus, wherein the hose assembly (15) comprises a primary passage (16) to transfer a cargo and a flange assembly (22) to engage with the flange assembly (14) of the connection element
- Said hose assembly (15) may be a part of a vehicle, or a standalone device/machine, or a deck crane.
