Definitions

  • Forming an object of the present invention is taping unit according to the preamble of the main claim.
  • a taping unit is an equipment adapted to apply an adhesive tape along flaps of boxes (usually made of cardboard) previously approached together to automatically close such boxes (where there was previously inserted at least one object).
  • a taping unit usually comprises a structure supporting a roll of the tape arranged on a pivot around which such roller can rotate. The tape is unwound from the roll, it is applied on the box and cut subsequently.
  • a taping unit is usually housed within a machine designed to support such taping unit above a work surface where displacement means, usually drive belts, advance the boxes so that the tape can be applied thereon.
  • a taping unit comprises several rollers and levers, assisted by springs, which allow the automatic deposition of the tape on a box.
  • the structure of the taping unit supports a first (front) lever with which there is associated a first rubbered roller which receives the tape from the roll.
  • Another second movable (rear) lever arranged at the rear end of the aforementioned structure, carries at least another rubbered roller, while between the two front and rear levers there is present an intermediate lever carrying a cutting blade fixed to the corresponding lever.
  • Such levers protrude from one side of the structure of the taping unit facing towards the work surface of the machine which supports it.
  • brushes adapted to improve the application of the tape.
  • the latter advances along the (movable) surface which supports it.
  • the box encounters the rubbered roller of the first lever or front lever on which it is placed and retained, in a per se known manner, by special lateral supports, the tape which, coming into contact with the box, is deposited and fixed thereon pushed by the respective lever (subjected to the load of the corresponding spring).
  • Such lever is folded towards the structure of the taping unit.
  • the tape is dragged along the box as the latter passes under the taping unit until it passes beyond the first lever and beyond the intermediate lever.
  • the end of the tape still associated with the tape roll is therefore ready to be positioned on a subsequent box which is at the front end of the taping unit by the rubbered roller carried by the first lever or front lever with which the box interacts given that the lever is extended with respect to the structure of the taping unit.
  • the taping unit comprises a control unit adapted to generate signals indicating the status of the taping cycle.
  • the unit is connected to a plurality of sensors each of which is adapted to detect the movement or the position of the box, the movement caused by the dispenser tape when taping the cardboard, as well as size (exhaustion) of the dispenser tape roller.
  • the signals detected by the sensors are sent the control unit, with a multiple timer circuit or a microprocessor pre-programmed with sequences and predetermined time values, to generate and emit a corresponding alarm signal based on the taping cycle.
  • a taping unit of the type described above may carry out a high number of taping operations (or cycles), also in extreme conditions that is up to 3000 cycles/hour with ensuing wear of the rollers, of the brushes and of the blade, as well as with the deposition of cardboard powder on the members of the taping unit when such boxes pass beneath such equipment.
  • An object of the present invention is to provide an improved taping unit which allows an operator or user to know when to intervene to carry out a maintenance operation on the equipment so as to always keep it in excellent conditions for the use thereof.
  • an object of the invention is to provide a taping unit which signals to the operator or user the need to intervene, even previously, to carry out the maintenance or to replace a worn out component.
  • Another object is to provide a control device which can be applied to any taping unit, marketed for the first time or already available in the market or even already in use which allows the operator or user to know when there arises need to intervene for the maintenance of the equipment with which it is associated.
  • a taping unit (also indicated as “equipment” in the present document) is generally indicated with 1. It comprises a structure 2 supporting, in a per se known manner, a pin 3 on which there is inserted a roller 4 of a tape 5 having, as known, a side provided with glue for the application thereof on folded flaps of a cardboard box (not shown).
  • the taping unit has a front part or side 6 and a rear part or side 7.
  • the structure 2 supports usual arms or levers 8, 9 and 10 respectively arranged in proximity of the front and rear part of the equipment (front lever 8 and rear lever 9) and arranged between such parts 6, 7 (intermediate lever 10).
  • the intermediate lever 10 carries a blade 11 for cutting the tape 5 and it is present at a side (lower in the figure) 12 of the structure 2 facing towards the box to be taped and which moves in a known manner below the taping unit 1.
  • the front lever 8 receives the tape 5 from the roll 4.
  • the structure 2 carries rubbered rollers 15 associated with a fixed frame 16 which receive the tape 5 directly from the roll 4, while each front 8 and rear 9 lever carries a rubbered roller 8A and 9A thereof. In proximity of the rollers there are present brushes 27.
  • the tape passes from the rubbered roller 8A rubbered roller 9A.
  • rollers rotate around corresponding pins which support them (not shown).
  • the levers 8, 9 and 10 are movable in a per se known manner with respect to the structure 2 being hinged thereto.
  • Springs, per se known and not shown usually keep the levers mentioned above in a position protruding from the structure 2 and they are folded towards it by the box when taping; at the end of this operation, they are elastically moved away from the structure 2 by the springs associated with the levers.
  • the taping unit 1 is provided with a device 20 adapted to indirectly detect the wear of components subjected to deterioration as it is used and to generate a warning for an operator/user designated to operate the equipment or the machine on which the equipment is mounted should there be detected the need for a maintenance operation on the taping unit.
  • the device 20 also determines the need to subject the taping unit 1 to cleaning or complete servicing and it generates a relative warning.
  • the device 20 operates by continuously controlling the number of operating cycles of the taping unit 1 and, depending on the number reached, it generates a corresponding alarm or warning: different numbers of operating cycles entail possible different interventions on the taping unit.
  • the device 20 comprises sensor members adapted to detect the movements of one of the front and rear levers and preferably of the rear lever 9.
  • sensor members for example comprise a magnet 21 associated with such lever 9 adapted to cooperate with a sensor 22, for example a Hall effect sensor arranged on a wall 2A of the structure 2 or however associated with a fixed part of such structure; whenever the rear lever 9 passes from an inoperative position ( figure 4 ) to an operative position, extended ( figures 1-3 and 5 ) and vice versa, there is a moving away and the subsequent approaching of the magnet 21 to the sensor 22.
  • the latter is electrically connected to a control unit 23 arranged on a printed circuit 24 associated with a support 25 fixed to the structure 2, for example at the rear part 7 thereof; the control unit 23 - in a per se known manner - records - in a storage unit connected thereto (not shown) - the number of detections of the sensor 22 that is the number of operating cycles, currently carried out by the rear lever 9 and therefore by the taping unit.
  • the control unit 23 continuously compares such number with a predefined limit value present in such storage unit (not shown)connected to the control unit and it determines, depending on the predefined limit comparison values, whether to generate a warning signal on a display 26 always carried by the printed circuit 24, for example, also indicating which maintenance operation is required.
  • the device 20 is also provided with an independent battery 27 (schematically shown in figure 3 and durable, for example five years) which allows the device 20 to be independent, in terms of electrical power supply, from the taping unit 1.
  • an independent battery 27 (schematically shown in figure 3 and durable, for example five years) which allows the device 20 to be independent, in terms of electrical power supply, from the taping unit 1.
  • a guard 30 covers the device 20.
  • the latter may also be contained, mostly, in an independent container.
  • such device may be associated with any taping unit, that has been newly manufactured (so as to be integrated therein) or already operating (as additional accessory) after the fixing thereof to the structure 2 in any manner.
  • the device 20 generates at least and preferably the following alarms or warnings:
  • the number of cycles after which the warning is generated are provided by way of example, but the data indicated may already detect the differences between the intervention times needed on the taping unit 1 subsequently to the taping operations to be carried out in time succession on boxes which move below the lower side 12 of the taping unit.
  • the operator Upon reaching the number of cycles for each single warning or alarm provided for, after carrying out the required maintenance operation, the operator will reset said alarm by holding a special sensitive button pressed for a defined period of time. The reset of the counting of the individual alarm does not stop the counting of the other alarms. Should the operator not reset the alarm thereof, the subsequent alarms will queue upon reaching the cycles provided for each single alarm and whenever the operator resets, each individual element in the queue will appear sequentially.
  • the device 20 is therefore capable of indicating when there arises the need to intervene on the corresponding taping unit for a maintenance operation (or replacement of components, like the blade 11). However, such device is also potentially capable of indicating, predictively or in advance, upon approaching a number of operating cycles at which a specific maintenance operation is to be carried out.
  • the sensor members may be associated with the front lever 8 rather than with the intermediate lever 10; such members may detect the movement of the lever also through other methods, for example optical.
  • the entire device 20 may be contained in a special container which can be applied in an appropriate position on the structure 2 to detect the movement of the lever/s.
