Definitions

  • the invention relates to a shut-off device for the recirculation circuit of a fuel cell stack with a hydrogen supply and a recirculation gas supply.
  • Fuel cells convert the chemical energy of a fuel into electricity by reacting with oxygen (usually from the air). Hydrogen is mostly used as a fuel. We will therefore always use “hydrogen” for fuel in the following, but explicitly include other gaseous fuels such as butane, propane, methane, methanol or other hydrocarbons.
  • PEM fuel cells are also called polymer electrolyte fuel cells, polymer electrolyte fuel cells, PEFC, proton exchange membrane fuel cells, proton exchange membrane fuel cells, PEMFC or solid polymer fuel cells, solid polymer fuel cells, SPFC. Since a fuel cell normally generates a voltage of only approx. 1 V, several cells are usually connected to form stacks or so-called stacks in order to achieve a higher overall voltage.
  • hydrogen fuel cells are supplied with hydrogen in excess of the stoichiometry, which means that they do not consume all the hydrogen in the anode compartment, as otherwise liquid water and inert gases would accumulate. In order not to waste the superfluous hydrogen, it is recycled, i.e. recirculated.
  • a recirculation circuit is provided, which deducts the hydrogen from the anode chamber and brings it to a mixing device in which it is mixed with fresh hydrogen and then fed back to the anode chamber.
  • a mechanical pump or a to run blowers in a circle This is known, for example, from WO 2012/104 191 A1.
  • the recirculation gas accumulates over the operating time with nitrogen and other undesirable gases that have to be released depending on the operating strategy. This is done via a purge valve. When purging, it is advantageous if the recirculation is prevented.
  • the object of the invention is therefore to propose a cheaper shut-off device for the recirculation circuit of a hydrogen supply for a fuel cell stack.
  • shut-off device with the features of claim 1.
  • Preferred embodiments of the invention are specified in the subclaims and the following description, which individually or in combination can represent an aspect of the invention.

  • the actual recirculation circuit shut-off valve is actuated by the high hydrogen pressure in the supply (currently around 900 bar), with the hydrogen supply pressure then actuating the valve slide of the actual recirculation circuit shut-off valve.
  • the fresh hydrogen pressure can also be significantly lower. Some operators work at approx. 25 bar medium hydrogen pressure.
  • the actual shut-off valve which has a significantly larger diameter, is then not moved according to the invention by an electric actuator, i.e. an assistant, but is pushed and opened by another force, so to speak.

  • the relatively high pressure (force per area) of the hydrogen supply exerts a relatively high force when it hits a piston (area), and thus also moves large pistons or slides safely and reliably.
  • a second valve here called what hydrogen switching valve, is switched upstream of the actual recirculation circuit shut-off valve.
  • the hydrogen switching valve can then be relatively small and can be moved by a small actuator.
  • This upstream valve switches the hydrogen supply pressure to the recirculation circuit isolation valve. Since the hydrogen supply pressure is significantly higher than the pressure in the recirculation circuit of the stack, the actual valve spool of the recirculation circuit shut-off valve moves to the “recirculation circuit closed” valve position due to the pressure differences.
  • the recirculation circuit shut-off valve then completely closes the recirculation circuit, but it is still possible to supply the stack with fresh hydrogen at the same time and thus continue to operate.
  • the hydrogen switching valve also has the advantage that only static seals are required to the outside. This means that it only has inexpensive, proven sealing elements and does not need any more expensive elements that would also seal during rotation.
  • the upstream hydrogen switching valve is a normally controlled valve that opens or closes an opening.
  • the actual recirculation circuit shut-off valve is a spool valve whose valve piston can partially or completely wear out the somewhat larger line as it moves. The slide or piston preferably moves transversely to the line to be opened and closed.
  • the stroke and the cross-section of the two valves can be freely selected within a wide range. It is favorable if the valve lift of the recirculation circuit shut-off valve is independent of the valve lift or armature lift of the hydrogen switching valve. Since this only gives the impetus for the movement of the recirculation circuit shut-off valve, a small valve lift is sufficient to allow the higher hydrogen pressure to act on the recirculation circuit shut-off valve, which can then move it further by a much larger lift.
  • the switched cross section of the recirculation circuit shut-off valve is also independent of the cross section of the hydrogen switching valve. Even a small bore pilot valve can allow the high hydrogen pressure to reach the large bore recirculation loop check valve and cause it to move.
  • the cross section or the bore of the recirculation circuit shut-off valve can be freely selected and is, for example, dependent on the prevailing pressure conditions between the water supply pressure and the recirculation circuit pressure in/on the stack.
  • the hydrogen switching valve can be activated in a known manner, for example pneumatically, hydraulically or mechanically.
  • the actuation can preferably take place electrically or electromagnetically, for example via a solenoid valve with an armature in a moving coil.
  • the piston of the valve moved by an actuator is actively pushed both in one direction and in the opposite direction, for example being moved by a flow in one direction and by the opposite flow in the other direction.
  • the hydrogen switching valve and/or the recirculation circuit shut-off valve each has a restoring mechanism, preferably an integrated restoring spring. This restoring component then causes a movement in the opposite direction.
  • the restoring element or springs will preferably move one or both valves into the so-called fail-safe position. This means, for example, that the return spring of the hydrogen switching valve presses it into the closed position, so that in the event of a power failure or another fault in the controller, the hydrogen switching valve is closed, i.e.
  • the downstream recirculation circuit shut-off valve remains open and the normal recirculation circuit is kept open.
  • the return spring of the recirculation circuit shut-off valve presses it into the open position, so that in the event of a power failure or another fault in the controller, the recirculation circuit shut-off valve is open, i.e. the normal recirculation circuit remains open. This is achieved by the two springs.
  • Two valves are used in the invention.
  • One is the hydrogen switching valve, which is actuated, and the other is the recirculation circuit shut-off valve, which is then pushed into the closed position by the flow of pressurized gas. It is advisable to provide a mechanism that allows the second valve to slide back into its original position after a while. This can be a small hole that vents the gas pressure somewhere after the first valve closes, allowing the second valve, the recirculation circuit isolation valve, to return to its normal position after a period of time.
  • valve slide of the recirculation circuit shut-off valve has a certain amount of leakage, ie its valve slide does not seal completely against the housing, the gas that has been introduced escapes, so that the valve slide moves back automatically, for example due to its return spring. Without this leakage, no pressure equalization would take place. This can be done by increased guide radial play and/or by a bore and/or by a relief groove.
  • the hydrogen has to be taken along and stored in a type of tank. To do this, it is stored either in liquid form or under pressure. Since liquid storage requires extremely low temperatures (a few Kelvin at most), storage under pressure (up to approx. 900 cash) enforced. This requires valves that are also designed for this high pressure range. Strong adjusting elements or actuators are often necessary here in order to carry out movements against these pressures.
  • a hydrogen switching valve is therefore used which has pressure compensation for the valve piston (or the armature in the case of solenoid valves) and thus significantly reduces the adjustment forces. You can therefore work with lighter and weaker actuators.
  • one or more overflow bores are therefore provided in the housing and/or in the actuator, which allow hydrogen to get to the other side of the valve piston and thus require only a lower actuating force. It is also possible to provide one or more longitudinal grooves in the piston or armature. A pressure compensation in the anchoring position is particularly useful.

Description

Fig. 1 : eine erfindungsgemäße Absperrvorrichtung,
