Definitions
- the present invention relates to a lubricant composition containing an ionic liquid and its use.
- ionic liquids can be used as additives in lubricants, such as lubricating greases and lubricating oils.
- lubricants such as lubricating greases and lubricating oils.
- tribologically relevant properties such as friction, wear and electrical conductivity can be favorably influenced.
- Good results are achieved in particular with ionic liquids which have CFx-containing groups. These groups are usually contained in the anions and, as additives in lubricants, improve their thermal stability and electrical conductivity. Due to its very good thermal and hydrolytic stability, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (bta) is an important representative of these anions.
- CFx-containing compounds are not biodegradable and ionic liquids containing such groups are persistent as a result.
- a possible second ionic liquid mentioned is, inter alia, trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide.
- ionic liquids based on bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (fsi) as anion have a significantly lower thermal stability than ionic liquids which have CFx-containing groups. This can be explained above all by the fact that the fsi anion lacks strong carbon-fluorine bonds, which has a negative effect on the overall stability of the molecule.
- a further disadvantage of the lubricant composition described is that the use of two different ionic liquids increases the complexity of the production process and the associated production costs, and that the lubricant composition is limited to non-polar base oils. It is true that the non-polar base oils can have a polar component. However, this is always less than 50% by weight, based on the total weight of the base oil.
- the EP2164935B1 describes the use of selected ionic liquids with fluorine-containing anions in lubricant compositions to reduce signs of aging in the lubricant and to reduce the electrical resistance.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a lubricant composition which can dispense with the use of bta-containing ionic liquids and which nevertheless has good tribologically relevant properties with regard to friction, wear and electrical conductivity.
- the lubricant composition should have sufficient temperature stability, preferably at least 180° C., and be able to contain a high proportion of polar base oils.
- the lubricant composition it is possible to dispense with the use of ionic liquids containing bta and still have good tribologically relevant properties with regard to friction, wear and electrical to get conductivity.
- the lubricant composition can contain a high proportion of polar base oils and it also has adequate temperature stability, preferably at least 180°C.
- the high thermal stability of the lubricant composition according to the invention was surprising, since ionic liquids based on bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide as the anion are known to have only low thermal stability.
- the lubricant composition comprises a base oil which, at a room temperature of 20° C., has a solubility for the ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide of at least 3% by weight. This ability to dissolve shows the high polarity of the base oil.
- the base oil also contains a base oil A, which likewise at a room temperature of 20° C. has a solubility for the ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide of at least 3% by weight.
- the solubility for the ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide is preferably carried out as described in the Test Methods chapter.
- the base oil can contain one or more base oils A and optionally also base oils that are different from base oil A. According to the invention, however, the lubricant composition preferably contains no other base oils apart from the base oil.
- the base oil has a solubility for the ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide of at least 3% by weight, preferably at least 5% by weight, more preferably at least 10% by weight, at a room temperature of 20° C. % on.
- the base oil has a solubility for the ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide at a room temperature of 20° C. at least in the range from 3% by weight to 30% by weight and/or at least in the range from 5% by weight.
- % to 30% by weight and/or at least in the range from 10% by weight to 30% by weight and/or at least in the range from 3% by weight to 20% by weight, and/or at least in the range from 5% by weight % to 20% by weight, and/or at least in the range from 10% by weight to 20% by weight, and/or at least in the range from 3% by weight to 15% by weight and/or at least in the range from 5% by weight % to 15% by weight and/or at least in the range from 10% to 15% by weight.
- the base oil A has a solubility for the ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide of at least 3% by weight, preferably at least 5% by weight, more preferably at least 10% by weight, at a room temperature of 20° C .% on.

Description
The present invention relates to a lubricant composition containing an ionic liquid and its use.
It is known that ionic liquids can be used as additives in lubricants, such as lubricating greases and lubricating oils. As a result, tribologically relevant properties such as friction, wear and electrical conductivity can be favorably influenced. Good results are achieved in particular with ionic liquids which have CFx-containing groups. These groups are usually contained in the anions and, as additives in lubricants, improve their thermal stability and electrical conductivity. Due to its very good thermal and hydrolytic stability, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (bta) is an important representative of these anions.
However, a disadvantage of CFx-containing compounds is that these groups are not biodegradable and ionic liquids containing such groups are persistent as a result.
- a) a lubricant, in particular containing a non-polar base oil,
- b) a first ionic liquid which is soluble in polyalphaolefin (PAO), in particular in PAO 400/40, made from 1-decene as a monomer component,
- c) a second ionic liquid which is insoluble in polyalphaolefin (PAO), in particular in PAO 400/40 made from 1-decene as a monomer component.
A possible second ionic liquid mentioned is, inter alia, trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide. However, those skilled in the art know that ionic liquids based on bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (fsi) as anion have a significantly lower thermal stability than ionic liquids which have CFx-containing groups. This can be explained above all by the fact that the fsi anion lacks strong carbon-fluorine bonds, which has a negative effect on the overall stability of the molecule.
A further disadvantage of the lubricant composition described is that the use of two different ionic liquids increases the complexity of the production process and the associated production costs, and that the lubricant composition is limited to non-polar base oils. It is true that the non-polar base oils can have a polar component. However, this is always less than 50% by weight, based on the total weight of the base oil.
The object of the present invention is to provide a lubricant composition which can dispense with the use of bta-containing ionic liquids and which nevertheless has good tribologically relevant properties with regard to friction, wear and electrical conductivity. In addition, the lubricant composition should have sufficient temperature stability, preferably at least 180° C., and be able to contain a high proportion of polar base oils.
- a) 20 to 99.5% by weight, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition, of a base oil, the base oil having a solubility for the ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide of at least 3% by weight at a room temperature of 20° C. and wherein the base oil has a base oil A in a proportion of at least 50% by weight, based on the total weight of the base oil, the base oil A having a solubility for the ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl) at a room temperature of 20°C imide of at least 3% by weight,
- b) 0.5 to 80% by weight, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition, of an ionic liquid whose anion is bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide.
According to the invention, it was found that with the lubricant composition it is possible to dispense with the use of ionic liquids containing bta and still have good tribologically relevant properties with regard to friction, wear and electrical to get conductivity. In addition, the lubricant composition can contain a high proportion of polar base oils and it also has adequate temperature stability, preferably at least 180°C. The high thermal stability of the lubricant composition according to the invention was surprising, since ionic liquids based on bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide as the anion are known to have only low thermal stability. Without committing to a mechanism, it is assumed that the surprisingly high thermal stability of bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide as anion in the lubricant according to the invention is due to solubilization by the base oil, which has a stabilizing effect. Stabilization by preventing or delaying autocatalytic effects by the base oil is also conceivable.
According to the invention, the lubricant composition comprises a base oil which, at a room temperature of 20° C., has a solubility for the ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide of at least 3% by weight. The base oil also contains a base oil A, which likewise at a room temperature of 20° C. has a solubility for the ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide of at least 3% by weight. It is advantageous here that the lubricant composition according to the invention shows a combination of properties which is particularly suitable for these applications. Another object of the present invention includes the use of the lubricant composition for lubricating drive elements, preferably roller bearings, in which a lower service temperature of not greater than -30 ° C, for example from -60 ° C to -30 ° C, preferably not greater than -40°C, for example from -60°C to -30°C, determined according to IP 186, Edition 2015 and/or preferably an upper service temperature of at least +160°C, for example from 160°C to 220°C, more preferably at least +180°C, for example from 180°C to 220°C, determined according to DIN 51821 1+2 edition 2016.7 is necessary.
The invention is explained in more detail below using a number of examples that do not restrict the invention.
As expected, the TGA measurements show better temperature stability for the P666(14) bta compared to the P666(14) fsi. When measured with both air and N 2 , volatility values are lower for the P666(14) bta. The better temperature stability for the bta can be explained by the strong carbon-fluorine bond in the anion.

At a test temperature of 150°C, there are differences in the evaporation loss for both ionic liquids in the pure substance. For the samples without a ball, there is a continuous increase in evaporation loss over the measured period for the P666(14) bta. In comparison, an overall increase in weight can be observed in the values for the fsi sample. In the presence of the steel ball, P666(14) fsi shows a lower evaporation loss than P666(14) bta. With Kugel, both substances have significantly higher values for evaporation loss overall. For the P666(14) fsi, however, the value falls again towards the end after an initial increase.
At 180°C, the evaporation losses for both substances are naturally higher than at 150°C. The value curve for the P666(14) fsi is inconspicuous in contrast to the lower test temperature. Nevertheless, at the end of the period these are higher than for the P666(14) bta. Overall, the observed values can be understood in such a way that, in addition to decomposition with loss of mass, phenomena such as absorption/release of water, corrosion of the steel ball and catalyzed decomposition also play a role. At 180°C, the tests on the substances in pure form suggest that the resistance of the fsi-containing IL is lower than the resistance of the bta-containing IL.
A.Production of two fats according to the invention and a comparison fat from a base fat A.
The base grease A consists of 85% by weight of a trimellitic acid ester with C9 - C11 alcohols with an oxygen/carbon ratio of 0.20 with a base oil viscosity at 40°C of approx. 72 mm 2 /sec (TMSE-A), from 11 % by weight of a urea thickener consisting of the reaction products of aliphatic saturated amines, aliphatic unsaturated amines and aromatic amines with a mixture of MDI (4,4'-diisocyanatodiphenylmethane) and TDI (mixture of 2,4-diisocyanatotoluene and 2,6-diisocyanatotoluene in a molar ratio of approx. 4:1). 0.5% by weight of p,p'-dioctyldiphenylamine and 3.5% by weight of other additives (corrosion protection, anti-wear) are used as additives.
Beim erfindungsgemäßen Fett 3 werden 5 Gew.% N1888 fsi verwendet und identisch eingearbeitet.5% by weight of P666(14) fsi (
A.In the service life test at 200° C., the
A number of fats according to the invention and a comparison fat are produced from a base fat B.
Das erfindungsgemäße Fett 7 zeigt eine Erhöhung der Lebensdauer um ca. 40 %.Compared to base grease B (comparative grease), grease 6 according to the invention shows an increase in service life of about 50% while maintaining the very steep failure curve (high β values). The grease 7 according to the invention shows an increase in service life of around 40%.
The addition of IL P666(14) fsi significantly reduces the specific electrical resistance. The worked penetration, on the other hand, changes only to a small extent, which shows that the thickening effect is not disturbed by the ionic liquid.
The specific electrical resistance of mixtures of P666(14) fsi or P666(14) bta in a polyglycol is measured.
The tables show that the lubricant compositions of the invention with P666(14) fsi result in lower resistivities compared to P666(14) bta.
This suggests that in fsi the ion pair is actually more tightly bound, i.e. less mobile, and should therefore show lower conductivities. However, as shown above, this is surprisingly not the case.
The influence of N1888 fsi on the thermal oxidative stability of an ester oil is examined.
The shear viscosity is determined at 25° C. at a shear rate of 300 1/s according to DIN 53019-1.3. The open dish test is carried out with aluminum evaporation dishes with a diameter of 50 mm. 5 g +/- 0.1 g are weighed out. The measurement is carried out in a circulating air oven. The measurement takes place over 24/48/72 hours. In each case, the evaporation loss is determined and the shear viscosity is measured.
The basic grease C is assigned to

The composition according to the invention shows advantages with regard to the reduction of the specific resistance, the low-temperature behavior (flow pressure) and the avoidance of hardening on storage at 180° C. (no increase in the dynamic viscosity).
Overall, it could be proven that lubricant compositions and in particular greases that contain ionic liquids based on fsi as anion achieve performance values that are in the range of a product with additives based on ionic liquids based on bta. Consequently, ionic liquids based on fsi are a good alternative to ionic liquids containing bta. In addition, fsi-based additives have the advantage over bta-containing additives of not containing any persistent CFx groups.
In the tests in which the P666(14) fsi was examined in its pure form, the results show, as expected, a lower thermal stability compared to P666(14) bta. This can be explained primarily by the fact that the anion lacks strong carbon-fluorine bonds, which affects the overall stability of the molecule.
Vorgaben an Hoch- bzw. Surprisingly, the difference in performance between the two ionic liquids is significantly smaller when used as an additive in fat be used. The values of the tested properties show that the performance of the P666(14) fsi is very similar to that of the P666(14) bta in the grease system under consideration. Specifications for high and low temperature properties as well as electrical conductivity can be met with the fsi material as an additive in the temperature ranges under consideration.
In addition, the specifications regarding corrosion stability can also be met with the lubricant composition according to the invention.
Overall, it was shown that lubricant compositions containing ionic liquids based on fsi are a good alternative to lubricant compositions containing bta-based ionic liquids in terms of their performance. In addition, the lubricant composition according to the invention does not have any persistent CFx groups and is therefore biodegradable.
