Definitions
- the present invention relates to a cylinder liner or a cylinder for an internal combustion engine.
- the friction within the piston-piston ring-cylinder system can be divided into contact friction, mixed friction and hydrodynamic friction.
- the proportion of hydrodynamic friction takes up a large part of the total friction. This is one of the main reasons why ever lower viscosities are sought for engine oils, because the hydrodynamic friction is proportionally dependent on the oil viscosity.
- the oil viscosity is again dependent on temperature. Since the cylinder temperature along the stroke position is usually highest at top dead center and lowest towards the crankcase at bottom dead center, the result is a low oil viscosity at top dead center, with the oil viscosity increasing continuously towards bottom dead center.
- hydrodynamic friction is proportionally dependent on the piston speed. Since the piston speed is highest in the middle of the piston stroke, you want to have a low oil viscosity there to achieve low hydrodynamic friction.
- a cylinder liner of a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine known, which is used in a machine frame.
- the cylinder liner is in operative connection with an essentially jacket-shaped heat pipe, which extends from a cooling water space to or into the collar, the heat pipe having means in its interior, for example a capillary structure, which allows the liquid heat transfer medium to be transported even against gravity along the cylinder tube.
- a cylinder liner of a reciprocating internal combustion engine is already known, to which at least one first coolant channel in the area of a top dead center of a piston movement of a piston of the reciprocating internal combustion engine and a group of second coolant channels in the middle liner area and in the area of a bottom dead center of a piston movement of a piston of the reciprocating internal combustion engine are assigned.
- the technical task of the invention is to optimize the oil viscosity along the stroke position.
- the invention relates to a cylinder liner or a cylinder for an internal combustion engine, comprising an inside that forms a running surface, the cylinder liner or the cylinder having at least one thermal insulation which extends in the circumferential direction around the cylinder liner or around the cylinder, wherein the insulation is arranged at a distance from the tread in the radial direction outwards.
- the advantage of the cylinder liner according to the invention or the cylinder according to the invention is that heat dissipation via the cylinder liner is reduced by insulation in the cylinder liner, thereby resulting in a lower oil viscosity and thus lower hydrodynamic friction in this area.
- the insulation of the cylinder liner or the cylinder can be continuous or only extend in sections around the cylinder liner or the cylinder.
- the insulation forms a closed ring that extends around the entire cylinder liner or the entire cylinder.
- the insulation is honeycomb or net-shaped and runs around the entire cylinder liner or cylinder.
- honeycomb or net shape compared to insulation in the form of a closed ring is that the webs with such insulation absorb loads that arise from piston movement in the cylinder liner or cylinder. This reduces deformation and extends the life of the cylinder liner or cylinder.
- the cylinder liner or the cylinder has an outside, with the insulation being exposed on the outside.
- Exposed insulation on a cylinder liner or cylinder outside is advantageous in terms of production and maintenance.
- the exposed insulation can also be created by painting or similar.
- the cylinder liner or the cylinder has an outside, with the insulation being arranged between the running surface and the outside.
- the insulation is designed as an evacuated or fluid-filled cavity.
- Vacuum thermal insulation provides thermal insulation by reducing the heat transport caused by the gas molecules in the air.
- the vacuum can prevent convection and, on the other hand, the heat conduction of the gas molecules.
- An example of preventing the heat conduction of gas molecules is the design of a vessel according to Dewar.
- the cavity is filled with insulating material.
- the running surface has a length L in the axial direction, with the insulation starting at a distance of 5-30%, preferably 10-25%, particularly preferably 15-20%, and extending from there extends in the crankcase direction.
- the running surface having the maximum length L is measured from the upper or combustion chamber side edge of the cylinder liner or cylinder.
- the area of isolation is defined according to the above feature, since it does not make sense to start earlier due to the piston fire land heights, since piston rings are not in the hydrodynamic engagement area there.
- the temperature in the chimney area should be dissipated for cooling purposes.
- the running surface in the axial direction has a piston stroke length K between a top dead center and a bottom dead center, the insulation being at a distance of 5 to 30%, preferably 10-25%, particularly preferably 15%. 20%, from top dead center begins at a distance and extends from there in the direction of bottom dead center.
- the piston stroke length K relates to a piston movement of an engine for which the cylinder liner or the cylinder is intended.
- the area of isolation is defined according to the above feature, since it does not make sense to start earlier due to the piston fire land heights, since piston rings are not in the hydrodynamic engagement area there.
- the temperature in the chimney area should be dissipated for cooling purposes. The insulation can even extend beyond the bottom dead center.
- a radial thickness of the insulation and/or a thermal resistance of the insulation increases and/or first increases and then decreases again in the axial direction from a combustion chamber in the direction of a crankcase.
- the advantage of an increasing and/or first increasing and then decreasing radial thickness of the insulation and/or the thermal resistance of the insulation in the axial direction from a combustion chamber in the direction of a crankcase is that an oil viscosity is optimally adapted to the operating conditions.
- the insulation is at a maximum of 85-95%, preferably 88-92%, particularly preferably 89-91% of an operating temperature in an area of the running surface in which there is a top land of a piston in conventional cylinder liners or Cylinders are located at a top dead center.
- the insulation is defined in operating temperature ranges according to the above feature, since in higher operating temperature ranges cooling must be carried out and therefore heat dissipation must not be reduced.
- At least one insulation is divided into 2-6 sections in the axial direction and/or at least one insulation is divided circumferentially into 2-72 sections or subregions thereof.
- Isolation in both the axial and circumferential directions can be optimally adapted to the operating conditions in order to influence the oil viscosity on the running surface in such a way that friction is reduced.
- the axial direction is the lifting direction. Sections in the axial direction are separated by webs or insulated to varying degrees, and sections in the circumferential direction are also separated by webs or insulated to varying degrees.
- the advantage of the webs is that they can absorb loads caused by piston movement in the cylinder liner or cylinder. This reduces deformation and extends the life of the cylinder liner or cylinder.
- the insulating material is selected from or consists of the group comprising plastic, foam glass, titanium, mineral/glass wool, ceramic particles, composite materials, pearlite and/or porous or foamed metal such as cast iron, metal spray layers or alloys.
- the insulating material has a porosity between 20-80%, preferably 40-80%, particularly preferably 60-80%.
- An insulation effect can be easily adapted to operational requirements due to the porosity.
- the cylinder liner or cylinder is produced by 3D printing and/or the insulation is produced by spraying metal and ceramic.
- 3D printing can create any structure on demand with little material consumption be realized. Preferably, however, only the insulation is printed or sprayed.
- the material of the insulation has no porosity, but conducts less heat than a material of the cylinder liner.
- Lower porosity means that load absorption is possible without restrictions, which reduces deformation and extends the service life of the cylinder liner or cylinder.
- Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of a cylinder liner according to an embodiment of the invention.
- the cylinder liner has an inside 2, which forms a running surface for a piston, an outside 6 and a circumferential insulation 4.
- a circumferential projection which ensures that a cylinder liner can be inserted precisely into an engine block.
- a circumferential rectangular recess which is intended for a fire ring.
- This fire ring prevents a hard carbon deposit from forming on the fire land of the piston. This is achieved by comparing the diameter of the cylinder bore smaller inner diameter of the fire ring. When the piston passes top dead center, the fire ring scrapes the unwanted carbon deposits from the piston and prevents deposits from forming on the fire land.
- a circumferential thermal insulation which is designed as a cavity.
- the cavity has a rectangular cross section and has wall thicknesses on the inside 2 and on the outside 6, which have the same constant radial thickness.
- running surface length L and the piston stroke length K can be seen.
- the running surface length L extends in the axial direction over the entire cylinder liner, the piston stroke length K only extends to the end of the cavity. This means that the bottom dead center corresponds to the lower end of the thermal insulation.
- Fig. 2 shows a sectional view of a cylinder liner according to another embodiment of the invention.
- the cylinder liner has an inside 2, which forms a running surface for a piston, an outside 6 and a circumferential insulation 4.
- a circumferential thermal insulation which is formed into a cavity by using material.
- the cavity has a rectangular cross section, is arranged on the outside 6 of the cylinder liner, and has a wall thickness to the inside 2 that has a constant radial thickness.
- the outside diameter of the material insert is equal to the outside diameter of the cylinder liner at the respective location.
- running surface length L and the piston stroke length K can be seen.
- the running surface length L extends in the axial direction over the entire cylinder liner, the piston stroke length K only extends to the end of the cavity. This means that the bottom dead center corresponds to the lower end of the thermal insulation.
