Description

Domaine techniqueTechnical area

The invention relates to the field of firearms and more particularly to a mounting rail as well as a firearm equipped with this rail.

The published patent document US 8,091,265 B2 discloses a firearm with a so-called “picatinny rail”. This rail allows you to connect one or more accessories. This rail also includes a printed circuit board providing electrical contacts for the accessory(s) requiring a power supply. In this document, the printed circuit board is housed in a groove formed between two rows of fixing notches. The electrical contacts are arranged on a free face of the printed circuit board between the two rows. However, this solution has the disadvantage that the printed circuit board is exposed to the outside. Additionally, the printed circuit board is made of less durable materials such as resin and ductile conductive metals. The printed circuit board can therefore be easily damaged following one or more shocks. Consequently, it must be regularly renewed to comply with the usage specifications. But, more critically, a failure of this printed circuit board can prove particularly problematic during an intervention.

Finally, the reduction in section of the fixing notches also poses problems of stability and mechanical resistance of the rail and reduces the bearing surfaces of the accessories fixed to it.

Mounting rails (picatinny) for a firearm have already been proposed to address this problem:
  • US2011/0010979 discloses a “picatinny rail” in which recesses are provided in the upper flat surface to allow the passage of electrical connections, each recess being positioned between two facing sides belonging respectively to two notches directly adjacent to said recess or in a central portion of the flat surface forming the top of a notch. However, these two design alternatives have the drawback of having recesses whose dimensions are not compatible with larger electrical interfaces. In addition, the rail is in two pieces limiting its resistance.
  • WO2011/079233 discloses a “picatinny rail” comprising orifices formed in the upper flat surface of said rail, each orifice being positioned between two sides facing adjacent teeth. This solution has the same defects as those of the previous document.

There Figure 3 shows that the housing 8 is defined in part by two recesses 20 provided between two opposite sides 16 of the corresponding notches 10. In the Figure 3 , each recess 20 extends in the longitudinal direction between the two sides of the corresponding notch 10. Also, each recess 20 extends vertically from the lower face 18 of the rail 2 to the ceiling 22 of the corresponding notch 10. The length of each recess 20 is greater than the thickness of the notch 10 corresponding to the level and below its foot line 24. The foot line 24 is defined by the intersection between the sides 16 of the notch 10 in question and the upper flat face 12. The housing 8 is further defined by zones of the upper flat face 12. These zones correspond to the flat surfaces defining the hollows between the notches. These zones are adjacent to the corresponding notches 10. Each zone of the upper flat face also serves to hold the printed circuit board 4. Each notch 10 may have a rectangular shape in the median plane of the rail 2. Preferably, the center of each recess 20 coincides with the center of each corresponding notch 10 along an axis perpendicular to the upper face 12. The length of the recess 20 can be between 100% and 120% of the thickness of the notch 10 corresponding to the level of its foot or below in the body of the rail 2.

There figure 4 illustrates a view from below, from above and a middle section of the entire mounting rail 2 according to the invention. The rail 2 can comprise fixing orifices 30 formed on the one hand at the ends of the rail 2 on the other in an intermediate region of the rail 2. The zones surrounding the orifices 30 each have additional notches which can also serve as means of fixings for one or more accessories. These notches are hollowed out in their central part to form passages for the corresponding fixing screws.

The present disclosure also relates to a manufacturing process which is not illustrated. The method may include a step of providing a rail 2 having notches 10 formed on an upper face 12 and spaced regularly and a step of machining the lower face 18. During the machining step, a series recesses 20 can be made by the same milling head of a machine tool or by several heads operating in parallel. Each material recess 20 extends vertically from the lower face 18 to the ceiling 22 formed in the corresponding notch 10, the ceiling 22 being positioned above the upper face 12, the recess 20 having a length greater than the thickness of the notch 10 corresponding to the level of its foot line 24. Advantageously, each recess 20 is centered on the notch 10 associated along an axis perpendicular to the upper face 12. Machining can be carried out from top to bottom with the rail 26 mounted on its workbench upside down or from bottom towards the top with the rail 26 mounted on its workbench right side up. During machining, the rail can be moving or stationary. Also, the step of machining the lower face 18 can be carried out before that planned for the upper face 18.
