Definitions
- the present invention relates to a printing method for producing high-gloss coatings, the use of a highly viscous printing medium in a printing method for controlling the gloss of coatings and a printed product obtained by the method according to the invention.
- Print products with different optical properties can be produced in printing machines. Visually appealing print products are desirable for numerous applications, for example in packaging printing. There is particular demand from consumers for print products that, as a whole or at least in parts, have a glossy look.
- glossy printed products are produced, for example, by coating the desired print image on the printing material with a colorless varnish in the coating unit of the printing machine.
- the results that can be achieved with regard to the resulting degree of gloss are partially limited, in particular when printing substrates printed with inkjet printing processes are coated in which the inkjet ink used is water-based.
- a conditioning agent also known as a precoat
- precoat is usually applied to the printing material prior to inkjet printing in order, among other things, to achieve better adhesion of the inkjet ink to the printing material, for example paper, cardboard or plastic.
- Most of the commercially available precoats however, have an acidic pH value, which is known to have a gloss-reducing effect on the colorless paint that is finally applied.
- the DE 10 2017 213 226 A1 describes a process for the production of a printed product in which a precoat with an acidic pH value is coated with water-based varnish.
- the method described is intended to reduce undesirable differences in gloss on the printed product.
- One reason for the particularly high gloss resulting from the method according to the invention could be that, due to the highly viscous property of the printing medium, there is little or no influence on the underlying layers, in particular the precoat layer, in the method according to the invention.
- the highly viscous printing medium does not react or only reacts to a small extent with the layers below, in particular the precoat layer.
- a printing material is provided.
- Suitable printing materials are preferably selected from paper, cardboard and plastics.
- the printing materials are preferably arcuate, web-shaped or in the form of bodies, for example spherical bodies.
- a conditioning agent is applied to the printing substrate.
- the application can be carried out by methods known in principle in the prior art, for example by spraying, knife coating or printing, inkjet printing and flexographic printing being preferred among the printing methods.
- the application in step ii) is particularly preferably carried out by means of flexographic printing.
- the conditioning agent is preferably selected from precoats, also referred to as primers, for water-based inkjet inks. Conditioning agents such as precoats are known in principle to the person skilled in the art and usually serve to increase the adhesion of the printed inkjet ink to the printing substrate and to achieve a better print image on the printing substrate.
- the conditioning agent has an acidic pH, that is to say a pH that is less than 7.
- the conditioning agent is dried on the printing material.
- Processes for drying conditioning agents preferably precoats, on printing materials in printing machines are known in principle to the person skilled in the art.
- Such drying processes preferably include the exposure of the printing material provided with conditioning agent with radiation, in particular infrared radiation, and / or hot air by means of one or more radiation dryers, for example LED dryers, and / or one or more hot air dryers.
- step iv) of the method according to the invention water-based inkjet ink is printed onto the dried conditioning agent by means of inkjet printing.
- Water-based inkjet inks are known in principle to the person skilled in the art; these dry essentially by removing the water contained in the ink.
- UV inkjet inks dry under the action of UV radiation or electron beams, possibly in the presence of one or more photoinitiators.
- step iv) in principle, all types of inkjet printing processes can be used. Such printing processes are known in principle to the person skilled in the art. In these, the inkjet ink is usually applied to the printing material by means of one or more inkjet print heads which have numerous print nozzles.
- step v) of the method according to the invention the water-based inkjet ink is dried on the printing material.
- Preferred drying processes are those mentioned as preferred for step iii).
- step vi) of the method according to the invention a highly viscous printing medium is printed on the dried water-based inkjet ink.
- the highly viscous pressure medium has a viscosity in the range from 40 to 400 Pa ⁇ s, particularly preferably in the range from 50 to 300 Pa ⁇ s, measured with a cone-plate viscometer at 20.degree.
- the highly viscous printing medium is non-aqueous. This means that the highly viscous printing medium has a water content of less than 10% by weight, preferably less than 5% by weight and particularly preferably less than 2% by weight, based on the entire highly viscous printing medium.
- the highly viscous printing medium is aqueous.
- the highly viscous printing medium has a water content of at least 10% by weight, preferably of at least 30% by weight and particularly preferably of at least 40% by weight, based on the entire highly viscous printing medium.

- the printing medium in this embodiment has highly viscous properties due to the high solids content.
- the highly viscous printing medium is selected from oil-based printing media and UV printing media.
- Oil-based printing media are known in principle to the person skilled in the art; these have one or more non-polar organic compounds as solvents, which are completely or partially removed during drying and thereby cause the oil-based printing medium to dry.

Description
The present invention relates to a printing method for producing high-gloss coatings, the use of a highly viscous printing medium in a printing method for controlling the gloss of coatings and a printed product obtained by the method according to the invention.
Print products with different optical properties can be produced in printing machines. Visually appealing print products are desirable for numerous applications, for example in packaging printing. There is particular demand from consumers for print products that, as a whole or at least in parts, have a glossy look.
In the prior art, glossy printed products are produced, for example, by coating the desired print image on the printing material with a colorless varnish in the coating unit of the printing machine. However, the results that can be achieved with regard to the resulting degree of gloss are partially limited, in particular when printing substrates printed with inkjet printing processes are coated in which the inkjet ink used is water-based. In water-based inkjet printing processes, a conditioning agent, also known as a precoat, is usually applied to the printing material prior to inkjet printing in order, among other things, to achieve better adhesion of the inkjet ink to the printing material, for example paper, cardboard or plastic. Most of the commercially available precoats, however, have an acidic pH value, which is known to have a gloss-reducing effect on the colorless paint that is finally applied.
There is a need for printing processes with which printing materials that have been printed on precoat using water-based inkjet printing can be produced with high gloss values. It should also be possible to generate high gloss values not only over the entire surface, but also only in certain restricted areas of the printing material.
It has now been found that it is possible to obtain high-gloss coatings on printing materials that have been printed with water-based inkjet ink on a precoat by inkjet printing by printing a highly viscous printing medium onto the dried water-based inkjet ink.
One reason for the particularly high gloss resulting from the method according to the invention could be that, due to the highly viscous property of the printing medium, there is little or no influence on the underlying layers, in particular the precoat layer, in the method according to the invention. Presumably, due to the usually low solvent content in the method according to the invention, the highly viscous printing medium does not react or only reacts to a small extent with the layers below, in particular the precoat layer. Presumably, therefore, there is little or no reaction between the gloss layer and the gloss-reducing acid of the precoat.
With the method according to the invention it is possible to provide printing materials with a high-gloss coating. It is also possible to produce a high gloss only on certain areas of the printing material, for example in the form of geometric figures, patterns, lettering and the like.

In step i) of the process according to the invention, a printing material is provided. In principle, all types of materials that can usually be processed in printing machines are suitable as printing materials. Suitable printing materials are preferably selected from paper, cardboard and plastics. The printing materials are preferably arcuate, web-shaped or in the form of bodies, for example spherical bodies.
In step ii) of the process according to the invention, a conditioning agent is applied to the printing substrate. The application can be carried out by methods known in principle in the prior art, for example by spraying, knife coating or printing, inkjet printing and flexographic printing being preferred among the printing methods. The application in step ii) is particularly preferably carried out by means of flexographic printing. The conditioning agent is preferably selected from precoats, also referred to as primers, for water-based inkjet inks. Conditioning agents such as precoats are known in principle to the person skilled in the art and usually serve to increase the adhesion of the printed inkjet ink to the printing substrate and to achieve a better print image on the printing substrate. In a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the conditioning agent has an acidic pH, that is to say a pH that is less than 7.
In step iii) of the process according to the invention, the conditioning agent is dried on the printing material. Processes for drying conditioning agents, preferably precoats, on printing materials in printing machines are known in principle to the person skilled in the art. Such drying processes preferably include the exposure of the printing material provided with conditioning agent with radiation, in particular infrared radiation, and / or hot air by means of one or more radiation dryers, for example LED dryers, and / or one or more hot air dryers.
In step iv) of the method according to the invention, water-based inkjet ink is printed onto the dried conditioning agent by means of inkjet printing. Water-based inkjet inks are known in principle to the person skilled in the art; these dry essentially by removing the water contained in the ink. In contrast to water-based inkjet inks, UV inkjet inks dry under the action of UV radiation or electron beams, possibly in the presence of one or more photoinitiators. In step iv), in principle, all types of inkjet printing processes can be used. Such printing processes are known in principle to the person skilled in the art. In these, the inkjet ink is usually applied to the printing material by means of one or more inkjet print heads which have numerous print nozzles.
In step v) of the method according to the invention, the water-based inkjet ink is dried on the printing material. Preferred drying processes are those mentioned as preferred for step iii).
In step vi) of the method according to the invention, a highly viscous printing medium is printed on the dried water-based inkjet ink.
In a preferred embodiment, the highly viscous pressure medium has a viscosity in the range from 40 to 400 Pa · s, particularly preferably in the range from 50 to 300 Pa · s, measured with a cone-plate viscometer at 20.degree.
In a further preferred embodiment, the highly viscous printing medium is non-aqueous. This means that the highly viscous printing medium has a water content of less than 10% by weight, preferably less than 5% by weight and particularly preferably less than 2% by weight, based on the entire highly viscous printing medium.
In a further preferred embodiment, the highly viscous printing medium is aqueous. This means that the highly viscous printing medium has a water content of at least 10% by weight, preferably of at least 30% by weight and particularly preferably of at least 40% by weight, based on the entire highly viscous printing medium. In this embodiment, the highly viscous pressure medium preferably has one high solids content, the solids content of the highly viscous printing medium preferably being at least 20% by weight, particularly preferably at least 30% by weight, based on the entire highly viscous printing medium. Despite the high water content, the printing medium in this embodiment has highly viscous properties due to the high solids content.
In a further preferred embodiment, the highly viscous printing medium is selected from oil-based printing media and UV printing media. Oil-based printing media are known in principle to the person skilled in the art; these have one or more non-polar organic compounds as solvents, which are completely or partially removed during drying and thereby cause the oil-based printing medium to dry. UV printing media are also known in principle to the person skilled in the art; these generally comprise one or more monomers or oligomers which dry essentially by crosslinking under the action of electron beams or UV radiation, optionally in the presence of one or more photoinitiators. Preferred UV printing media are selected from UV inkjet inks.
In a further preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the highly viscous printing medium is essentially colorless. As a result, a transparent, high-gloss coating is obtained on the resulting printed product, under which the printed image of the water-based inkjet ink is visible to the naked eye. It is also possible to add one or more colorants such as one or more pigments to the highly viscous printing medium.
In a further preferred embodiment, the highly viscous printing medium is capable of lithography. This means that the highly viscous print medium can be processed in a printing machine and that the highly viscous print medium is suitable for printing processes with which non-full-surface print images can be printed on the printing material, for example geometric figures, patterns, lettering and the like. In contrast to lithographic print media, non-lithographic print media are generally only suitable for full-surface application to the printing material.
In principle, all printing processes are suitable as printing processes in step vi) with which highly viscous print media, in particular those mentioned above as preferred, can be printed onto printing materials in printing machines. Preferred printing processes are those in which the print medium is applied indirectly to the printing material. Particularly preferred printing processes are selected from offset printing processes, letterpress printing processes and flexographic printing processes. Very particularly preferred printing processes are selected from indirect letterpress printing processes. The person skilled in the art will modify the configuration of the printing press in these basically known printing processes, in particular those mentioned above, if necessary in a suitable manner in order to process and print high-viscosity printing media. For example, it may be necessary to adjust the print media supply in the flexographic printing unit in order to be able to process highly viscous print media. It is also possible to use different variants of offset printing, for example using structured rubber blankets.
The invention also relates to a printed product obtained by the process according to the invention according to steps i) to vii).
It is also possible to provide a printing material with a two-layer structure, this having a first layer of at least one dried conditioning agent and a second layer of at least one dried water-based inkjet ink, the first layer being in contact with the second layer, and the highly viscous one thereon To print and dry the media.

- a) providing a printing material which has a first layer of at least one dried conditioning agent and a second layer of at least one dried water-based inkjet ink, the first layer being in contact with the second layer,
- b) Printing a highly viscous printing medium onto the dried water-based inkjet ink and
- c) drying the printed, highly viscous printing medium on the printing substrate.
In step a) the printing materials mentioned for step i), the conditioning agents mentioned for step ii) and the water-based inkjet inks mentioned for step iv) are preferred. In step b), the highly viscous printing media and printing processes mentioned for step vi) are preferred. In step c) the drying processes mentioned for step vii) are preferred.
In a preferred embodiment, the highly viscous printing medium in step b) is non-aqueous. This means that the highly viscous printing medium has a water content of less than 10% by weight, preferably less than 5% by weight and particularly preferably less than 2% by weight, based on the entire highly viscous printing medium.
In a further preferred embodiment, the highly viscous printing medium in step b) is aqueous. This means that the highly viscous printing medium has a water content of at least 10% by weight, preferably of at least 30% by weight and particularly preferably of at least 40% by weight, based on the entire highly viscous printing medium. In this embodiment, the highly viscous printing medium preferably has a high solids content, the solids content of the highly viscous printing medium preferably being at least 20% by weight, particularly preferably at least 30% by weight, based on the entire highly viscous printing medium. Despite the high water content, the printing medium in this embodiment has highly viscous properties due to the high solids content.
In a further preferred embodiment, the highly viscous printing medium in step b) is selected from oil-based printing media and UV printing media. The printing process with which the highly viscous printing medium is printed in step b) is preferred, selected from offset printing processes, letterpress printing processes and flexographic printing processes. Particularly preferred is the printing process with which the highly viscous printing medium is printed in step b), selected from indirect letterpress printing processes.
The invention also relates to the use of a highly viscous printing medium in a printing process for controlling the gloss of a coating of dried water-based inkjet ink.
With the method according to the invention it is possible to produce printed products with high gloss values in printing machines. Here, gloss points (GP) of more than 60 or more than 70 are usually achieved. In methods known from the prior art for producing glossy coatings in printing machines, on the other hand, as a rule only gloss points (GP) of less than 60 are achieved. In addition, with the method according to the invention it is possible in a simple manner to produce the gloss only in discrete areas of the printing material, in contrast to the full-surface application, for example by means of lithographic offset printing.
