Das bei dem Erhitzen des Tabaks entstehende Gemisch aus Luft, Dampf und Rauchpartikeln wird dann vom Raucher eingezogen. Es liegt auf der Hand, dass es auf Grund der Erhitzung durch glühende Kohle zu einer Kohlenmonoxidvergiftung zu einem Verbrennungsunfall oder im Extremfall sogar zum Ausbruch von Feuer kommen kann. Die qualitative und gesetzeskonforme Bestückung der Shisha ist auf Grund der manuellen Befüllung nicht gewährleistet. Prinzipiell sollten heute bekannte Shishas daher nur im Freien oder in Räumen mit garantierter Frischluftzufuhr betrieben werden. Shishas nach Stand der Technik bauen außerdem recht schwer und voluminös, müssen gleich aus mehreren Teilen zusammengesetzt werden und sind in ihren Einzelteilen umständlich zu transportieren.
